Since 8 a.m. this Tuesday, firefighters in Savoie have been mobilized at the UCPA center in La Plagne, which specializes in hosting minors. Around one hundred people presented symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea. Several doctors were dispatched to the scene.

Around a hundred young people experienced gastroenteritis-like symptoms at the UCPA center in La Plagne 1800 in Tarentaise (Savoie), starting at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31st. However, the first cases appeared as early as Monday evening; the outbreak did not spread overnight. Throughout the morning, masks, thermometers, and basins were in use!

A holiday center transformed into a hospital ward

Firefighters, along with several doctors and two ambulances, arrived early Tuesday morning at the center, which hosts summer camps and school ski trips. Ultimately, no children required hospitalization . According to emergency responders, the outbreak was a highly contagious case of gastroenteritis. The Regional Health Agency and the Savoie prefecture were mobilized. This week, the center is full , with children from four different countries: Canada, Great Britain, Belgium, and France .

The young people are going back to skiing

By 2 p.m., the crisis appeared to have passed at the UCPA center in La Plagne. " Several young people were able to resume skiing as normal in the early afternoon," according to Jean-Luc Boch, the town's mayor.

Nearly a hundred children, on holiday in La Plagne (Savoie) and staying at a UCPA center, are suffering from vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. All were treated by emergency services this morning. Six doctors were dispatched to the scene and diagnosed a gastroenteritis outbreak.

A gastroenteritis outbreak has affected around one hundred children this Monday, March 30th and Tuesday, March 31st, at a UCPA center in La Plagne, Savoie. Here's what we know.

All the symptoms of gastroenteritis

Vomiting, diarrhea, nausea... The first symptoms of gastroenteritis appeared in several young people, mostly aged between 11 and 13, late Monday afternoon. The number of cases increased throughout the evening.

In total, 97 children of four different nationalities were affected out of the approximately 370 young people present in the building. No adults are showing symptoms, according to information gathered on site by France 3 Alpes.

Numerous rescue teams deployed

Faced with this large number of cases, emergency services were called to the scene shortly after 8 a.m. on Tuesday morning. A total of 18 firefighters and six doctors went to the holiday center. It was the doctors who diagnosed a gastroenteritis outbreak.

The sick children were asked to return to their rooms. Firefighters completed their operation shortly before 3 p.m. on Tuesday. Samples were taken and will be analyzed soon.

"Dozens of people lying on the ground"

On Tuesday, several young people reported a "strange" atmosphere at the holiday center: "This morning, we came out of our room and in the corridor, there were about ten people lying on the floor with their blankets. They had masks and trash cans right next to them. It was a gloomy atmosphere ," said one of them, originally from Canada.

"There are many sick people. Our group consists of 25 people. Only 11 of us are not sick. We were lucky, we were able to ski all day ," he continued.

Disinfection work underway

Following these various cases, a cleaning and disinfection process was undertaken at the UCPA center: "We have a whole team working on overall cleanliness. They work on the common areas, the restrooms, the restaurant, the bar, etc... In addition to this daily cleaning, there is a three-step process: we wash, we dry and then disinfect with Bactalim (a bactericidal disinfectant, editor's note) . We apply it everywhere to limit the spread ," explains Manon Deglio-Esperse, hospitality manager of UCPA La Plagne 1800.

"It can always happen in a group setting. We are a center for 400 people. Every time a child arrives sick, it can therefore spread quickly," she said, putting things into perspective.

"It's not frequent, but unfortunately it happens," acknowledged Jean-Luc Boch, the mayor of La Plagne. He reassured everyone about the young people's health and indicated that some of them had already returned to the mountains on Tuesday afternoon. "There were no medical evacuations or hospitalizations. What's rather worrying is finding the source of these infections and eradicating the cause. It could take time, but the Regional Health Agency (ARS) will tell us what protocol to follow ," he added.

An emergency meeting is scheduled.

According to our information, the first cases of illness in children had already been identified last week during another stay. In light of these numerous cases, an emergency meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening between the Regional Health Agency (ARS), the mayor, and the director of the UCPA center.

The purpose of this meeting will be to determine whether it is necessary to close the center in the coming hours.
