Health authorities have noted an unusual increase in cases of Legionnaires' disease in Savoie since June. Investigations are underway to determine the source or sources of contamination. Several samples have been taken and are currently being analyzed.

Context

[Situation update as of August 13]

Between June 1st [SUP]and[/SUP] August 12th, 43 cases of Legionnaires' disease were reported to health authorities in Savoie:
  1. 36 cases reside in Savoie, 7 have stayed in the department.
  2. The sick people are between 26 and 91 years old.
  3. 41 cases were hospitalized for respiratory problems; most have been discharged and recovered.
  4. Two deaths have been reported, both involving people over 80 years old.
Epidemiological and environmental investigations are underway to try to determine the origin of the contamination. They are being carried out by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regional Health Agency and Public Health France, in conjunction with the Regional Directorate for the Environment, Planning and Housing (DREAL), the Departmental Directorate for Employment, Labour, Solidarity and Population Protection (DDETSPP) and the National Reference Centre (CNR).

They made it possible to prioritize the west of the department, particularly the Chambéry basin : 27 of the 43 cases reside and/or have frequented the area.

Around thirty samples were taken : water networks in apartment buildings, cooling towers, supermarkets, restaurants, etc. The first results will be available by August 17.

Healthcare professionals in the sector have been informed of the situation so that they can more quickly identify potential patients with symptoms suggestive of this infection.

Health authorities have noted an unusual increase in cases of Legionnaires' disease in Savoie since June. Following investigations to identify the source of the contamination, initial results have not yet revealed the origin of the infection.

Context

[Situation update as of August 18]

Between June 1st [SUP]and[/SUP] August 14th, 46 cases of Legionnaires' disease were reported to health authorities in Savoie:
  1. 39 cases reside in Savoie, 7 have stayed in the department.
  2. The sick people are between 26 and 91 years old.
  3. 44 cases were hospitalized for respiratory problems, most of whom have recovered and returned home.
  4. Three deaths have been reported, all involving people over 80 years old. Two of these deaths, including the most recent one, are linked to contamination of the private water supply.
Epidemiological and environmental investigations have been carried out and are still ongoing to try to determine the origin of the contamination. They are being conducted by the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regional Health Agency and Public Health France, in conjunction with the Regional Directorate for the Environment, Planning and Housing (DREAL), the Departmental Directorate for Employment, Labour, Solidarity and Population Protection (DDETSPP) and the National Reference Centre (CNR).

They made it possible to prioritize the west of the department, particularly the Chambéry basin : 37 of the 46 cases reside and/or have frequented the area.

Nearly fifty samples were taken : water networks in apartment buildings, cooling towers, supermarkets, restaurants, etc.

At this stage, these investigations have not yet definitively identified the source of contamination . The teams at the Regional Health Agency (ARS) and its partners remain fully committed to continuing the investigation to identify the origin of this contamination.
It should be noted that in the majority of grouped cases of Legionnaires' disease investigated in France over the past 15 years, the source of contamination could not be identified.

Furthermore, healthcare professionals in the sector have been informed of the situation, so that they can more quickly identify any patients presenting symptoms suggestive of this infection.
