A highly pathogenic strain of bird flu was found in the pet section of a shop

PARIS – France has detected a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu in the pet section of a shop in one of Corsica’s main cities, the farm ministry said on Monday, in a latest outbreak of the disease in Europe in recent weeks.

In a statement, the ministry said all the birds in the shop have been euthanised, adding that the whole of France would be put on high alert level as of Tuesday.

An outbreak of bird flu detected in Haute-Corse

Monday, November 16, 2020

France has detected an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) strain H5N8 in Haute-Corse. The case was identified in the animal center of a garden center located south of Bastia, following the observation of abnormal mortalities among the poultry detained.

Significant mortality was observed in geese and chickens on November 7, in the town of Lucciana. The services of the departmental directorate of social cohesion and population protection immediately took samples to find out the origin of this mortality.

Following this discovery, the Minister of Agriculture and Food decided to place the entire metropolitan national territory at a “high” risk level as of November 17, 2020.

The first elements of analysis of the H5N8 strain isolated in Corsica show a similarity with one of the strains currently circulating in the Netherlands, which is not zoonotic (not transmissible to humans). Investigations are underway to identify the origin of the contamination (wildlife or domestic poultry)

France reports further outbreak of highly pathogenic bird flu

PARIS (Reuters) - France has detected a highly pathogenic strain of bird flu in a pet shop in the Yvelines region near Paris, days after an identical outbreak in one of Corsica’s main cities, the farm ministry said on Thursday.

In a statement, the ministry said all the birds in the shop have been euthanised. It added that protective zones had been established in the area.

Avian influenza: A second case detected in France

The Ministry of Agriculture and Food indicates this Thursday evening that a second case of avian flu has been detected in metropolitan France, in a pet store located in Yvelines , in the Paris region. Three days after the announcement of the first outbreak in Haute-Corse.

"A new outbreak has just been confirmed by the National Health Security Agency (Anses) in an animal facility in Yvelines," said the ministry in a press release, stressing that analyzes revealed "the presence of the H5N8 virus, identical to that detected in Haute-Corse, not transmissible to humans ”. Adding that "the epidemiological investigation is continuing in order to identify the links between these two foci and the origin of the contamination".
