The first outbreaks of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) were declared in France in September 2023 in cattle farms in the southwest. This infectious disease caused by a virus is transmitted exclusively by midges of the genus Culicoides , the same as those of bluetongue (BT). The detection of EHD outbreaks leads to specific control and prevention measures within a radius of 150 km around the outbreaks. This regulated zone can be viewed below (map). Between June 1 and September 19, 2024, 1,160 outbreaks of epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) were recorded in France in livestock farms due to the resumption of vector activity (i.e. culicoides). A study is underway in infected farms to consolidate mortality and morbidity data. The care implemented allows in almost all cases a cure of sick animals within a few days.

Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD): the State, mobilized to protect French livestock and slow the progression of the disease, launches the vaccination campaign
In view of the evolution of MHE on the national territory, and as Minister Marc Fesneau had committed to, the vaccination strategy has just been established in consultation with the sectors. It aims to limit the progression of the disease by setting up a vaccination buffer zone. The list of municipalities in this vaccination zone has been published in the Official Bulletin .
To this end, two million doses of vaccines have been ordered and 100% covered by the State for an amount of more than 9 million euros, i.e. enough to protect 1 million cattle, in order to stabilise the disease-free zone.
According to the recommendations of the ANSES National Reference Laboratory for Vector-Borne Diseases, to achieve this vaccination buffer zone objective, it is necessary to combine a minimum number of vaccinated animals with a minimum width of vaccination zone, which the strategy deployed by the ministry makes it possible to achieve.
The optimal combination selected corresponds to a vaccination zone 50 km wide along the internal limit of the regulated zone (see map below).
