France: Minister of Education warning of influenza A rise in schools
Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

November 17, 2009, 06:31 Paris, Nov 17 (Prensa Latina)

The French Education Minister Luc Chatel, warned here on a rapid increase of cases of influenza A (H1N1) in schools since last weekend.

A total of 32 educational institutions were closed and 124 classes, according to latest reports.

Moreover, the National Institute of Health Surveillance yesterday reported 11 new deaths related to influenza A in mainland France, bringing the number to 43.
Of the total, only three had no risk factors.

Since last Thursday, more than six million French people were called to be vaccinated as part of a massive campaign against influenza A (H1N1) that develops in the country for priority groups.

According to surveys published by news media, only 20 percent of the Gauls would be vaccinated even though the campaign might be more successful if a pandemic intensified.

On Friday 13 November, the French Agency for Sanitary Safety of Health Products (Afssaps) reported that 100 thousand people vaccinated were 91 cases with undesirable effects, of which four serious.

In the latter reported two neurological conditions (a Guillain-Barre syndrome), allergic reactions and respiratory rate. However, the Afssaps clarified that the undesirable effects after application of the immunizing may have another cause.

Also, the agency stated that these cases raise questions about the medicine.

With four of 100 thousand in these conditions, the proportion is similar to stationary influenza vaccination, which does not affect the risk-benefit balance of applied Pandemrix stressed the Afssaps.
