France - Lot-et-Garonne: outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza H5N3 detected in a duck farm

Avian flu: 12,000 ducks slaughtered in Lot-et-Garonne

Analyzes conducted in a duck farm in Lot-et-Garonne revealed the presence of a strain "low pathogenic H5N3" which should nevertheless lead to the slaughter of 12,000 animals quarantined since Friday, said the President of the Lot-et-Garonne Chamber of Agriculture on Sunday to Reuters.

Serge Bousquet-Cassagne said he was informed by the prefecture at the beginning of the afternoon of the results of the analyzes carried out in a national laboratory in Finist?re.

"The ducks actually had a big cold probably due to the cold snap, that's all. So it's a false alarm and the precautionary principle pushed to the extreme will apply and the 12,000 ducks will be slaughtered. We fell well down. So we continue to slaughter healthy ducks who have a cold, "said the elected representative of the agricultural union Coordination Rurale, the majority in the department, who had already opposed systematic slaughter.

The breeder of Monbahus, near Marmande in the north-west of the department, is expected to lose his livestock for the second time, after the massive slaughter of ducks during the recent bird flu crisis.

After the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 epizootics and the slaughter of several million palmipeds, new biosecurity standards have been put in place.

Samples are now taken during each movement of the animals, and at the slightest suspicion all the livestock concerned and those in the area around, namely six municipalities in this case, are placed in quarantine.

c'est , donc, un de ces ?tablissements qui pr?tend faire de la bios?curit?, mais, a le droit d'avoir 3200 animaux dehors en p?riode de risque ?lev? ?

No slaughter for 12,000 Lot-et-Garonne bird flu ducks

The 12,000 ducks in the Lot-et-Garonne infected with a low-risk strain of bird flu will not be killed, it was confirmed today.

The department has decided not to slaughter the animals, which are infected with H5N3, a weak strain of avian flu, reports French newspaper Le Monde today.

The ducks and the farm itself - which is a breeder and foie gras producer in Monhabus near Marmande, in the north-west of the Lot-et-Garonne - has been in quarantine since December 1, but no further measures will be imposed due to the low risk and low impact on the animals themselves, confirmed the department, working with the minister for agriculture and food agency the Direction g?n?rale de l?alimentation (DGAL)...
