Following the reporting of a first case of indigenous chikungunya on August 7, 2025 in the commune of Eybens in Isère, investigations carried out by the ARS Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Public Health France have identified 26 indigenous cases to date.

In this context, a public information meeting is being organized by the Eybens town hall on September 8 at 6:30 p.m. This public meeting will take place at the Joséphine Baker community hall in the presence of representatives of the ARS Auvergne Rhône-Alpes, Public Health France and EIRAD. The objective is twofold: to inform residents of the evolution of the outbreak of indigenous cases of chikungunya in the town and to remind them of the need to adopt simple and useful actions to limit the presence of the tiger mosquito, the vector of this disease.

What diseases can the tiger mosquito transmit?

Beyond the nuisances it causes on a daily basis, the tiger mosquito can carry diseases linked to viruses such as dengue , chikungunya or Zika through its bites . It becomes a carrier of one of these diseases by biting an infected person returning from a trip to tropical areas where these viruses circulate. After 2 to 3 days, it risks transmitting the virus by biting another person, and this throughout its life cycle (about one month).

Symptoms generally appear 3 to 7 days after the infectious bite, and are characterized by a sudden onset of high fever and joint pain that can be intense, sometimes accompanied by other symptoms (muscle pain, headache, rash, etc.).

Since May 1, 2025, 67 cases of chikungunya, including 31 indigenous cases, have been confirmed in the Isère department. An indigenous case is when a person contracts the disease without having been in an area where the virus is actively circulating in the two weeks preceding the onset of symptoms. Thirty-two cases of imported dengue fever and one case of imported Zika have also been recorded since the start of the surveillance period. More information on diseases transmitted by the tiger mosquito and their symptoms can be found on the ARS website .

Bergerac

More than fifty cases of chikungunya in Bergerac, another town affected by the virus

Valentin Plat
Published on Monday, September 8, 2025 at 4:00 p.m.

The spread of chikungunya continues to increase in the Dordogne region, with the Regional Health Agency announcing that Bergerac has reached the 50-case mark. According to the latest ARS bulletin, the commune of Marsalès, near Monpazier, has also recorded its first indigenous case.

This Monday, September 8, 2025, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional Health Agency announced that the number of chikungunya cases has increased in the Dordogne department. Indeed, the number of indigenous cases has increased from 37 (last Thursday) to 52 cases in the department. In detail, 51 cases were recorded by the ARS in Bergerac and one case was detected in Marsalès , near Monpazier, in the south of the Dordogne.

"All the people concerned are in a state of health that does not give rise to concern," explains the Regional Health Agency in a press release. In an attempt to explain this proliferation of chikungunya, the ARS puts forward three hypotheses : "the presence of imported cases that are asymptomatic or have not been diagnosed, the colonization of the town by the tiger mosquito and favorable climatic conditions . "

Mosquito control operations
New mosquito control operations are planned in the coming days to stem the spread of the virus. As a reminder, these are 52 indigenous cases , meaning that the people were infected on French territory, in mainland France, by a tiger mosquito carrying the disease. According to our information, a mosquito control operation will take place this Tuesday in Mauzac-et-Grand-Castang, 30km from Bergerac.

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine Regional Health Agency explains that "anyone living in Bergerac or having visited the town and who presents these symptoms should consult a doctor. The Emergency Number 15 and the hospital emergency department should be called as a last resort or in the event of serious symptoms. A blood test will be prescribed by the doctor and will confirm the diagnosis . "

First case of indigenous chikungunya in Centre-Val de Loire

News
September 12, 2025

The ARS Centre-Val de Loire confirms the detection of an indigenous case of chikungunya in the commune of Orléans-Loiret, for the first time in the region. This case was diagnosed in a person who had not recently traveled to a tropical area where the virus usually circulates.

Imported case and indigenous case: what are we talking about?

Imported case
Imported case: This is a person who contracts the disease outside the national territory and who first develops symptoms after returning from their trip. The infected person contracted the virus during their trip and returned with the disease.

Indigenous case
An autochthonous case is when the infected person was infected locally, i.e., without having traveled to an area where the virus usually circulates. This means that transmission took place in mainland France, via the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), now present in all departments of the Centre-Val de Loire region.
A situation under close surveillance

The ARS Centre-Val de Loire, in conjunction with Public Health France, the prefecture and authorized operators, immediately initiated the following actions:
  1. An epidemiological investigation: identification of places frequented by the patient during the period of viremia.
  2. An entomological survey: search for the presence of the tiger mosquito around these places.
  3. Preparing for mosquito control operations around the patient's home to prevent any risk of secondary transmission. The goal of these treatments is to limit the risk of transmission to other people by eliminating adult mosquitoes, which carry the virus, and their breeding sites. Residents affected by the mosquito control operation are informed by a flyer placed in their mailbox. If residents have not received information in their mailbox, it is because their home is not affected by these treatments.
  4. Information from the mayor.
  5. Search for secondary cases: awareness raising among health professionals in the area and call for reporting of any suggestive symptoms.
  6. Local communication with the population to strengthen prevention.
What are the symptoms of chikungunya?

Symptoms usually appear 3 to 7 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito:
  1. Sudden fever
  2. Severe joint pain
  3. Headaches
  4. Rash
  5. Persistent fatigue
  6. If you experience any symptoms, consult a doctor promptly and report your municipality of residence and any recent travel.
How to protect yourself and limit the spread?

If you are sick:
  1. Protect yourself from mosquito bites for at least 7 days after symptoms begin.
  2. Wear covering clothing, use repellents, mosquito nets or diffusers.
  3. Avoid unnecessary travel to limit the risk of transmission.
For all residents:
  1. Eliminate stagnant water (saucers, gutters, water collectors, etc.) around your home
  2. Protect yourself from bites (long clothing, repellents).
The role of local authorities

The municipalities are mobilized to:
  1. ensure the absence of larval breeding sites in public spaces (cemeteries, gutters, fountains, etc.).
  2. relay prevention instructions to residents.

Record number of indigenous outbreaks, 87 cases in Antibes, 59 in Fréjus... an update on the chikungunya epidemic in the Alpes-Maritimes and Var

An unprecedented total of 252 indigenous cases of arboviruses, including 242 cases of chikungunya, have been recorded in the PACA region since June 1, 2025, according to the ARS. Antibes, Fréjus, and Vitrolles are the most active centers in this unprecedented epidemic in mainland France.

The editorial staff Published on 09/18/2025 at 2:52 p.m., updated on 09/18/2025 at 2:54 p.m.

Chikungunya, transmitted by the tiger mosquito, continues to spread in the Alpes-Maritimes and, more broadly, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region.

Since June 1, 252 indigenous cases of arboviruses have been recorded in the region, including 242 cases of chikungunya and 10 of dengue , the Paca Regional Health Agency (ARS) announced this Thursday, September 18.

Antibes, still the epicenter of the Alpes-Maritimes

In the Alpes-Maritimes, the number of infections has risen rapidly. 87 cases have now been identified in Antibes , compared to 71 ten days earlier.

This outbreak, described as the largest ever seen in metropolitan France , remains at the center of health concerns.

"The progression is strong at the moment, and there is still a proliferation of tiger mosquitoes ," explained Fabrice Dassonville, head of the Environmental Health and Crisis Management department for the Alpes-Maritimes at ARS Paca, during the previous situation update on September 9 .

Numerous door-to-door actions, SMS alerts and targeted mosquito control operations have already been carried out , particularly in the north of Antibes (Combes district, Chemin de Saint-Claude, Allée des Fées, Chemin du Valbosquet, etc.).

Three particularly active outbreaks

At the regional level, three outbreaks are classified as worrying due to their intensity and their evolving nature:

- Antibes (87 cases), in several districts of the commune.
- Fréjus (59 cases) , with a high concentration in one district, but suspicions elsewhere.
- Vitrolles (Bouches-du-Rhône, 45 cases) , where the virus continues to circulate.

If the first episode in Antibes generated several secondary cases (notably linked to La Gaude), the situation is now part of a broader framework.

This is one of the 21 indigenous chikungunya outbreaks identified throughout the region, including 7 in the Alpes-Maritimes, 9 in the Var, 8 in the Bouches-du-Rhône and one in the Vaucluse .

Focus on the Var

The Var region has 9 active outbreaks of indigenous trafficking, which confirms a worrying and unprecedented situation in the department, confirms Le Monde.

The most recent figures for the Var department show a major outbreak in Fréjus, where 59 cases of chikungunya have been recorded , according to the latest report.

The other affected Var municipalities are not detailed in public sources on September 18, but Fréjus remains the departmental epicenter.

Reminder of the ARS recommendations
- Use skin repellents.
- Wear long clothing.
- Absolutely avoid pockets of stagnant water (bowls, buckets, tanks), where the tiger mosquito lays its eggs.

A patient can transmit the virus to the mosquito that bites him for a period of nine days (two days before the first symptoms and up to seven days after).

The mosquito then becomes a vector and spreads the disease to other people.

Chikungunya: the milestone of 500 contaminations exceeded in Metropolitan France in 2025, never seen before

According to Public Health France, some 570 cases of chikungunya were recorded in metropolitan
France in 2025, spread across 65 outbreaks. This is 90 more than last week.

By Le Parisien with AFP
September 24 , 2025 at 2:30 p.m.

The number of indigenous cases of chikungunya has now passed the 500 mark for 2025 alone, Public Health France announced on Wednesday, an unprecedented level that underscores the extent to which mosquito-borne infections are spreading. As of September 22, 570 cases of chikungunya , spread across 65 outbreaks, have resulted from contamination in France since the beginning of the summer, according to the health agency's weekly report. The previous week, the figure stood at 480.

While several episodes are now closed, the summer of 2025 is of unprecedented magnitude in mainland France for indigenous cases of chikungunya , whose virus is transmitted from one human to another via tiger mosquito bites and causes fevers and joint pain. Until then, there had never been more than a few dozen cases per year in mainland France for this disease, usually confined to tropical areas.

An explosion of cases in Reunion

This year, a major epidemic in Réunion Island has encouraged the arrival of cases in mainland France, but more generally, the context of global warming is facilitating the establishment of the tiger mosquito in regions where it was still absent a few decades ago. Another disease transmitted by this mosquito, dengue fever, continues to be the subject of a few cases in mainland France, although the scale is much smaller: 24 cases in 11 outbreaks according to the latest report.

For these two diseases, "the indigenous cases are located in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Corsica, Île-de-France, Occitanie, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur regions, already affected in previous years, and for the first time this year in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Centre-Val de Loire, Grand Est and Nouvelle-Aquitaine," underlines Public Health France.

The Ministry of Health had insisted in mid-September that the chikungunya season is far from over, calling for particular vigilance among travelers returning from the Antilles and Guyana.

The regional health authorities of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur announced this Wednesday that all residents of Antibes, a town hit by a particularly large outbreak with around 100 cases, would receive a text message advising them to be careful of mosquito bites and to contact a doctor if they experience unusual symptoms.

A vaccine, developed by the Valneva group , exists against chikungunya, but its future is uncertain following sometimes fatal side effects. The United States has suspended it, and France announced this week that it remains contraindicated for those over 65, pending a new evaluation in early 2026.
