First indigenous case of chikungunya in 2025 in mainland France, in the Var

Marseille (AFP) – The first indigenous case of chikungunya in 2025 in mainland France was detected on Wednesday in the Var region, in the commune of La Crau, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Regional Health Agency announced in a press release on Friday.

Published on:06/13/2025 - 1:37 PM
Modified on:06/13/2025 - 1:34 PM

Only one indigenous case of this virus transmitted by the tiger mosquito had been detected in 2024 in mainland France, in Ile-de-France, and none in 2023. Since 2010, mainland France had experienced around thirty indigenous cases of this virus.

Until now, since the beginning of the year, all cases of chikungunya recorded in mainland France came from contamination outside the territory, mainly in Réunion, this French island in the Indian Ocean which has been hit for several months by an epidemic of this virus unprecedented in twenty years.

"Immediate measures are being implemented to limit any risk of spread," assured the ARS Paca, mentioning in particular mosquito control carried out in the commune, "on public roads and in private gardens located around the case," in order to eliminate larval breeding sites and adult mosquitoes as quickly as possible.

Similarly, a door-to-door survey will be conducted in homes in the affected area to identify people who may be showing symptoms.

We speak of an indigenous case when a person contracted the disease on national territory and did not travel to a contaminated area in the 15 days preceding the onset of symptoms.

This year, the chikungunya epidemic, a disease that causes fever and joint pain, has hit Reunion Island the hardest, with 23 deaths, although it is now continuing to decline. An estimated 200,000 people have been infected on the island since January.

While the epidemic is clearly declining in Réunion, it is still gaining momentum in Mayotte, also in the Indian Ocean, where it broke out later. According to the latest report, 746 cases have been reported since the beginning of the year, but this figure likely appears to be an underestimate.

The warmer temperatures currently affecting France are increasing the activity of tiger mosquitoes, vectors of this virus as well as those of dengue and Zika.

In 2024, there were also 83 indigenous cases of dengue fever in mainland France, between the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Occitanie and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regions.

Having appeared in mainland France in 2004, the tiger mosquito is in any case continuing its rapid expansion across the country, particularly towards the north: at the start of 2025 it was present in 81 departments, or 84% of mainland departments, according to new data released in mid-May by Public Health France.

Dengue fever and chikungunya could become endemic in Europe due to global warming, urbanization, and travel, all factors that promote the spread of the tiger mosquito, according to a study published in the journal Lancet Planetary Health in mid-May.

Faced with this progression, and in an attempt to halt it, several thousand male tiger mosquitoes rendered sterile by X-rays were released in mid-May in Brive-la-Gaillarde (Corrèze), as part of an experiment of unprecedented scale in mainland France.

With this sterile insect technique (SIT), used for decades in the agricultural sector, the offspring of females, the only ones responsible for the bites, would gradually be neutralized and the populations should automatically decrease.

Var: first case of chikungunya detected in La Crau

Press release
June 13, 2025

commuqiue-presse_0.png

The first indigenous case of chikungunya was detected this Wednesday, June 11, 2025, in the commune of La Crau (Var).

This is the first confirmed case in metropolitan France this year. Immediate measures are being implemented to limit any risk of spread.

We speak of an indigenous case when a person contracted the disease on national territory and did not travel to a contaminated area in the 15 days preceding the onset of symptoms.

As a reminder, chikungunya is transmitted from person to person through the bite of a mosquito (tiger mosquito present in mainland France) infected with the chikungunya virus.

Field actions to stop the spread of the virus

To prevent the spread of the disease, mosquito control is being carried out in the municipality by the Interdepartmental Agreement for the Control of Mosquitoes on the Mediterranean Coast (EID-Med), on public roads and in private gardens located around the case. The goal is to quickly eliminate breeding sites and adult mosquitoes, which can transmit the virus.

This mosquito control action will be supplemented by a door-to-door survey carried out by the ARS Paca and Public Health France in homes in the affected area in order to identify people who may be showing symptoms, inform them on what to do and disseminate prevention messages.

Finally, hospitals, private doctors and medical analysis laboratories in the area are also mobilized to care for, screen and remind people who may present symptoms of chikungunya of preventive measures.

Everyone, by changing their behavior, can protect themselves and their loved ones.

1. Protect yourself from mosquito bites

It is advisable to:
  1. use a skin repellent, especially in the morning and at the end of the day
  2. wear loose, covering clothing;
  3. use air conditioners or fans which bother mosquitoes;
  4. use mosquito nets for newborns or bedridden people
2. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any suggestive symptoms : high fever, joint or muscle pain, fatigue, headache, skin rash.

3. Avoid the proliferation of mosquitoes

Eliminate stagnant water in which mosquitoes develop, by following simple and effective actions to be carried out once a week:
✓ empty plant pots and anything that retains small quantities of water (garden furniture, tarpaulins, etc.);
✓ store anything that may contain water (children's toys, buckets, watering cans) away from the rain;
✓ close water reserves (barrels, cans) tightly or cover them with a mosquito net;
✓ ensure that gutters drain properly;
✓ maintain green spaces that can become resting places for adult mosquitoes.

Chikungunya: a new indigenous case detected in Hérault, the second in metropolitan France in 2025

"The person's state of health does not give rise to concern," the ARS stated in a press release.

Article written byfranceinfo
Radio France

The Occitanie regional health agency has confirmed the detection of an indigenous case of chikungunya in Hérault, in a person who had not recently traveled to tropical areas, according to a press release published on Monday, June 16.

This is the first indigenous case recorded this season in Occitanie and the second in metropolitan France in 2025, after a first case detected in the Var on June 11. "The person's state of health does not give rise to concern ," specifies the ARS, but preventive measures were immediately deployed in Prades-le-Lez, the presumed site of contamination, to avoid any local spread of the virus.

More than 900 imported cases of chikungunya have been recorded in France since January.

Chikungunya, transmitted by the tiger mosquito, manifests itself through a sudden fever, severe joint pain, and sometimes a rash. In response to this indigenous case, health authorities launched targeted mosquito control campaigns, entomological surveys, and an active search for cases in the neighborhood to identify other potential cases.

"People who have been in the town of Prades-le-Lez and who have shown signs suggestive of chikungunya since the beginning of May are invited to consult their doctor," explains the ARS. According to official data from the regional health agency (ARS) and Public Health France, more than 900 imported cases of chikungunya have been recorded in metropolitan France since the beginning of 2025.

Strong suspicion of indigenous case of chikungunya in Montoison (Drôme): update

Health alert
June 23, 2025

vignette%20veille%20sanitaire_cas%20autochtone.png

On Monday, June 16, 2025, the ARS Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes received a report of a highly suspected autochthonous case of chikungunya in Montoison, Drôme. Find all the information on this situation and the actions implemented by the ARS and its partners.

Context

On June 16, 2025, the ARS Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes received a report of a suspected case of indigenous chikungunya.

This person is believed to have been locally infected by a tiger mosquito that bit another person returning from a trip to a tropical area.

The first analyses received on June 18 support this hypothesis. The final results of the sampling will be confirmed by the National Reference Center for Arboviruses at the beginning of the week.

If the case is confirmed, it would be the third episode of indigenous transmission observed in the Drôme department, after the cases of dengue in Bourg-Lès-Valence in September 2023 and Montélimar in August 2024.

On June 19, the ARS mandated the Rhône-Alpes Interdepartmental Mosquito Control Agreement (EIRAD) to carry out an entomological survey, to confirm the presence of tiger mosquitoes in the area frequented by the person.

EIRAD teams went door-to-door to inform residents of the affected area (around fifty homes) of the adulticide treatment that would be carried out on the night of June 23-24.

Health monitoring and actions implemented

Area concerned

The actions carried out and planned are only planned for a restricted sector, frequented by the indigenous case, residing in the commune of Montoison.

Clear mosquitoes from the area

A mosquito control operation, led by EIRAD , will take place on the night of June 23-24, 2025, to limit the risk of transmission to other people. The goal is to quickly eliminate breeding sites and adult mosquitoes, which carry the virus.

Residents in the affected area (around fifty homes) were informed by a flyer placed in their mailboxes. If residents did not receive information in their mailboxes, it means their homes are not affected by these operations.

Check if other people have been infected

This mosquito control action will be supplemented by a door-to-door epidemiological survey scheduled for Wednesday, June 25. It will be conducted by agents of the ARS and Public Health France, among residents of the neighborhood where the person concerned resides.

The goal is to ensure that people living in the area have not been infected by a tiger mosquito bite, to raise awareness of the symptoms of chikungunya, and to advise them on what to do if they experience symptoms. All residents of the affected area have been informed.

Furthermore, the mayor of the commune of Montoison, the Prefecture of Drôme, the hospitals of Valence and Crest as well as health professionals (SAMU 26 , members of the Territorial Professional Health Community) were informed.

New actions may be implemented depending on how the situation evolves.

Recommendations to the population

Monitor your health

People returning from travel to tropical areas should be particularly vigilant and:
  1. avoid being bitten by tiger mosquitoes when they return
  2. Consult a doctor immediately if symptoms appear.
People living in an area where tiger mosquitoes are present should also remain vigilant and consult a doctor if in doubt.
Symptoms suggestive of chikungunya are, in the absence of another established diagnosis: high fever (>38.5°C), associated with at least one other clinical sign such as:
  1. muscular, joint or lower back pain, which may persist over time,
  2. skin rashes,
  3. headaches,
Protect yourself from mosquito bites

To protect yourself from mosquito bites, it is advisable to use a skin repellent and wear loose, covering clothing.

Limiting the proliferation of tiger mosquitoes

The best way to avoid tiger mosquito bites is to prevent them from taking up residence in your home!
Find all the information on the tiger mosquito in our dedicated section .
In the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, since the start of enhanced surveillance on May 1, 2025, [SUP]until [/SUP] June 17, 2025, 113 cases of imported chikungunya have been recorded, including 5 in the Drôme department.

Chikungunya: eight indigenous cases recorded in mainland France, a level never seen so early in the year

The departments concerned are Hérault, Var, Bouches-du-Rhône, Drôme, Gard and Corsica, according to Public Health France.

The World with AFP
Published today at 1:21 p.m., modified at 1:44 p.m.

Chikungunya is circulating at an unprecedented level this early in the year in metropolitan France, with eight indigenous cases detected so far, the French Public Health Agency (SPF) reported on Wednesday, June 25. "These indigenous cases, whose first symptoms appeared between May 27 and June 19, are the earliest ever identified in mainland France ," the agency emphasized in a weekly report .

An "indigenous case" means that the infected person contracted the disease in mainland France from a tiger mosquito bite – unlike "imported cases," which refer to people who were infected elsewhere before traveling to mainland France. So far, eight indigenous cases have been detected, all in the south of the country: in Hérault, Var, Bouches-du-Rhône, Drôme, Gard, and Corsica.

"Such an early start in the mosquito season and such a high number of outbreaks have never been observed before ," insists SPF. Furthermore, SPF says it has established a clear link between several cases that have appeared in mainland France and the ongoing epidemic overseas in Réunion, where some 200,000 residents have been infected since March and around twenty deaths.

Epidemic underway in Mayotte

"For at least two indigenous cases, the identification of viremic cases [with the presence of the virus in the blood] from Réunion [is] probably the origin of local transmission ," the agency emphasizes.

Although we cannot yet speak of an epidemic in mainland France, this observation fuels fears of epidemic transmission between Reunion Island and mainland France. This risk has been raised by health authorities for several weeks. It is all the more heightened with the return of high temperatures in mainland France. High temperatures contribute to the circulation of the tiger mosquito, a phenomenon exacerbated by global warming.

In Réunion, the epidemic is easing with the arrival of the southern winter, but another chikungunya epidemic is underway in Mayotte. However, its extent is difficult to determine, as authorities believe the number of reported cases is likely lower than the actual number.

Press release - An indigenous case of chikungunya detected in Gironde on 02/07/2025

Press release
July 2, 2025

Visuel_Communique_Presse_V2_678_454.png

The first indigenous case of chikungunya was detected in Nouvelle-Aquitaine today, in the Gironde region in the commune of Illats. The case involves a 5-year-old child. Immediate measures are being implemented to limit any risk of spread.

We speak of an indigenous case when a person has contracted the disease on national territory and has not traveled to a contaminated area in the 15 days preceding the onset of symptoms . As a reminder, chikungunya is transmitted from person to person, only through the bite of a mosquito (tiger mosquito present in mainland France) infected with the chikungunya virus.

The child has been discharged from hospital and his condition is not a cause for concern.

Field actions to stop the spread of the virus

To prevent the spread of the disease, mosquito control operations will be carried out by Altopictus (the ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine tiger mosquito entomological monitoring operator in Gironde) in public spaces and private gardens around the places frequented by the child during his contagious period. The objective is to eliminate the breeding grounds and adult mosquitoes that can transmit the virus.

Following these mosquito control actions, a door-to-door survey will be carried out by the ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Santé publique France in collaboration with the Illats town hall. The objective is to identify people who may be presenting suggestive symptoms (sudden onset of fever above 38.5°C, joint pain, rash, fatigue, muscle pain) and inform them on the course of action to take.

Finally, hospitals, private doctors and medical analysis laboratories in the area are also mobilized to care for, screen and remind people who may present symptoms of chikungunya of preventive measures.

By adopting the right actions, everyone can protect themselves and their loved ones.
  1. Protect yourself from mosquito bites
    It is recommended:
    1. To install mosquito nets for newborns or bedridden people;
    2. To wear covering and loose clothing;
    3. Use a fan to keep mosquitoes away.
    In the commune of Illats, it is also recommended to apply a skin repellent, particularly in the morning and at the end of the day, after consulting your pharmacist on the choice of product.
  2. Prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes
    Eliminate stagnant water in which mosquitoes thrive by following simple and effective steps to be taken once a week:
    1. Empty plant pots and anything that retains small amounts of water (garden furniture, tarpaulins, etc.);
    2. Store anything that may contain water (children's toys, buckets, watering cans) away from the rain;
    3. Seal water containers tightly or cover them with mosquito netting.
    The ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine monitors the tiger mosquito and mobilizes communities to implement measures to combat its proliferation. Each year, it runs a communication campaign "No quarter for mosquitoes" and provides town halls with a dedicated platform (prevention tools, social mobilization actions, etc.): Tiger Mosquito - Health Environment Nouvelle-Aquitaine .
  3. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any symptoms: high fever, joint or muscle pain, fatigue, headache, skin rash.
Chikungunya: increased surveillance in France

Surveillance of dengue, chikungunya and Zika is based on mandatory reporting of cases, during the mosquito activity period from May 1 to November 30, by doctors to the ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

Since May 1st, the start of enhanced surveillance and until July 1st, 2025, the following have been identified in France, in addition to the indigenous case detected in Gironde:

7 episodes of indigenous transmission of chikungunya in mainland France
(14 cases) in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Corsica, Occitanie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Grand Est (1st [SUP]case[/SUP] detected in 2025),

712 imported cases of chikungunya,

496 imported cases of dengue fever,

1 imported case of Zika.

The ARS and Public Health France recall the importance of reporting cases which allows for rapid intervention aimed at limiting indigenous transmission .

Indigenous cases of chikungunya in Bouches-du-Rhône: update

Press release
July 8, 2025

communique-presse_0.png

Following the identification on June 20 of two indigenous cases of chikungunya within the same family in the commune of Salon-de-Provence in Bouches-du-Rhône (see press release of June 25), the total to date is 12 indigenous cases.

While 10 are located in the same neighborhood of Salon-de-Provence, the other two reside in the municipalities of Grans and Lambesc.

No direct link has yet been established between these two cases and the Salon traffic zone.

Field actions to stop the spread of the virus

Several of these new cases were detected thanks to enhanced surveillance conducted on the ground, notably through door-to-door campaigns conducted by the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Regional Health Agency (ARS) and Public Health France. More than one hundred homes were visited in the affected neighborhoods.

Mosquito control operations carried out by the Interdepartmental Agreement for the Control of Mosquitoes on the Mediterranean Coast (EID-Med) are underway on public roads and in private gardens near cases in order to eliminate breeding sites and adult mosquitoes that can transmit the virus.

These mosquito control actions are supplemented by door-to-door information campaigns for the population carried out by the ARS Paca and Public Health France in homes in the affected neighborhoods.

Everyone, by changing their behavior, can protect themselves and their loved ones.
  1. Protect yourself from mosquito bites
It is advisable to:
  1. apply a skin repellent, especially in the morning and at the end of the day;
  2. install mosquito nets for newborns or bedridden people;
  3. wear loose, covering clothing;
Insect repellent bracelets, essential oils, ultrasonic sound devices, tapes, papers and sticky stickers that have not been proven effective are not recommended.
  1. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any symptoms : high fever, joint or muscle pain, fatigue, headache, skin rash.
In this case, protection against mosquito bites is essential. A patient can transmit the virus to mosquitoes up to 7 [SUP]days[/SUP] after the onset of symptoms (even if they disappear).
  1. Prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes
Eliminate stagnant water in which mosquitoes lay eggs and develop:
  1. empty plant pots and anything that retains small amounts of water (garden furniture, tarpaulins, etc.) at least once a week;
  2. store anything that may contain water (children's toys, buckets, watering cans) away from the rain;
  3. seal or cover water reserves with mosquito netting.
Finally, hospitals, private doctors and medical analysis laboratories in the affected areas are also being mobilised to treat, screen and remind people who may be showing symptoms of chikungunya of preventive measures.

Is a chikungunya epidemic to be feared in mainland France, where cases of transmission are increasing?

While an epidemic of this mosquito-borne virus is already raging in Réunion and Mayotte, 25 cases of infected patients have been recorded in mainland France this summer, including in the Grand Est region. This is unprecedented at this stage of the season.

Article written by Florence Morel

A tropical disease that is gradually establishing itself on the European continent. For the first time, on July 2, an episode of indigenous transmission of chikungunya was detected in the northern half of France, in the Bas-Rhin. This, together with the precocity and the number of episodes already identified in mainland France, "confirms the significant risk of indigenous transmission" , that is to say, cases of people infected by the disease without having traveled to a risk area beforehand, warned Public Health France (SPF). A week later, 11 new indigenous cases were recorded, bringing their total to 25 since the beginning of the season, according to the weekly bulletin published by the health agency, Wednesday, July 9.

Contaminations by this virus, transmitted by mosquitoes, had already occurred in France, but never so early in the summer, emphasizes Public Health France. "Such an early start in the mosquito activity season and such a high number of episodes had never been observed until now ," she insists. "We did not expect to detect an indigenous case in the Grand Est region ," explains Anna-Bella Failloux, an entomologist at the Pasteur Institute. " We suspected it for Corsica and the Paca and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes regions, because there have already been some in the past, but not in this continental area ." The most affected department is in fact Bouches-du-Rhône, where 12 indigenous cases have been identified since mid-June in Salon-de-Provence and two neighboring towns , making it "the most widespread outbreak at this stage" according to SPF. But the risk exists "even in regions that have been unaffected until now ," the health agency warned on July 2.

Cases probably linked to the epidemic in Reunion

Public Health France points to the link with the current epidemic in several territories of the Indian Ocean, including Mayotte, but especially Reunion , where the virus has caused around twenty deaths and contaminated around 200,000 people.(New window)The latter " generated many more imported cases [contaminated in Reunion but detected in mainland France] than usual ," explains Louis Lambrechts, head of the Virus-Insect Interactions team at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, to TF1 .(New window). There have been 761 since May 1, according to the latest SPF bulletin. Although the indigenous cases were infected in mainland France, the chain of transmission "necessarily comes from an imported case" at the start, the researcher continues. This is also how a previous epidemic wave, which hit Réunion in 2007, triggered a "mini-epidemic" in northern Italy, where more than 300 cases had been identified, Eric d'Ortenzo, an epidemiologist at Inserm, recalled on franceinfo in early June .

Should we fear that such a scenario will occur in metropolitan France, eighteen years later? "The risk is real," warns Eric d'Ortenzio, hence the need to "monitor" the situation and "tell the population to protect themselves ," by using repellents, "the only means of prevention against this disease ," the doctor emphasizes, or by limiting the proliferation of tiger mosquitoes , by avoiding stagnant water for example. For the moment, there is no specific treatment against chikungunya, and the vaccine administered in France, Iwchiq, remains perfectible. On July 2, the French National Agency for the Safety of Medicines (ANSM) said it had recorded "47 cases of adverse effects" in vaccinated people between March 7 and June 2, including "18 serious cases ." Three deaths have been reported, although the link with vaccination has not been formally established in two of these cases. As a result, since April 26, health authorities no longer recommend vaccination for people aged 65 and over, even if they have comorbidities.

Raising awareness among metropolitan doctors about diagnosis

For his part, Louis Lambrechts believes that the presence of these indigenous cases in mainland France requires "concern" , because the more there are, "the greater the risk that another person will be infected by a mosquito carrying the virus" . In addition, this tropical disease is "all the more difficult to diagnose because doctors in mainland France are not yet necessarily aware of this disease, which delays diagnosis".

A point of view shared by Arnaud Bertolotti, professor in the infectious diseases and dermatology department at the University Hospital of La Réunion. "We all have preconceived ideas about this disease ," he emphasizes. As coordinator of prospective studies on arboviruses, diseases transmitted by insects, he observes a cohort of patients with chikungunya. "We have observed other, rarer symptoms in elderly people, such as pulmonary or digestive problems ," he emphasizes . "It is important that doctors are aware of this, because once the disease is diagnosed, protocols are activated to limit its spread . "

Since May 1, health authorities have launched a reinforced surveillance system, which involves epidemiological investigations for each new case identified. When it is an indigenous case, mosquito control operations are initiated, as well as an "active search for cases (...) to determine the extent of local transmission and adjust the perimeter" of the area to be mosquito controlled, recalls SPF. For the moment, "the situation is not worrying, but we must remain vigilant ," tempers Anna-Bella Failloux.

"Our health system is strong enough to tackle this disease. We are the only country in Europe to detect cases of chikungunya, with very few holes in the net."
Anna-Bella Failloux, entomologist at the Pasteur Institute
to franceinfo

"It is very possible to have epidemic outbreaks, it seems less likely that a fuse will light and start an epidemic that becomes uncontrollable," Xavier de Lamballerie, director of the National Reference Centre for Arboviruses, told Le Parisien.(New window). At least for this year. "With global warming, all the warning lights are starting to go on to say that the south of mainland France will experience chikungunya epidemics in the years or decades to come ," underlines Arnaud Bertolotti, from the University Hospital of La Réunion. "Overseas territories are being closely watched in terms of research to anticipate what could happen in mainland France . "

“Rethinking our habitat” to fight mosquitoes

The high temperatures at the end of June and those to come suggest that the proliferation of the tiger mosquito will continue, amplifying the risk of contamination. Present on 84% of the territory , this insect is classified among the ten most invasive species in the world. "Once the tiger mosquito is established, it can no longer be removed, regrets Anna-Bella Failloux. It has the particularity of laying eggs that can survive for months, even years in dry conditions, because of a shell that protects them and cannot be destroyed by insecticides ." This is why companies are trying to sterilize mosquitoes(New window)males (only females bite and transmit the viruses) or to replace the type of tiger mosquito that inoculates the virus with a mosquito that cannot transmit it.

Alongside these attempts, "we will have to rethink our habitat ," emphasizes Anna-Bella Failloux, and "our way of greening our cities, by limiting the proliferation of mosquitoes." The entomologist thus suggests preferring certain plants "incompatible with the tiger mosquito" and avoiding installing slatted terraces, "which are very good mosquito reservoirs . " "We just need to communicate between scientists and people in the construction industry ," she argues. " But one thing is certain, we cannot continue what we are doing . "

Indigenous chikungunya: one confirmed case and several suspected cases in Gard

Updated on
01/08/2025

In the Gard region, in the commune of Poulx, a case of indigenous transmission of chikungunya has been confirmed, and several suspected cases are currently under investigation. The health of the infected individuals does not give rise to concern. Preventive measures are already being implemented at potential transmission sites to prevent the virus from spreading locally.

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus). It most commonly manifests as a sudden onset of fever, often accompanied by severe joint pain and a rash.

An autochthonous case is when a person contracts the disease without having been in an area where the virus is actively circulating in the two weeks preceding the onset of symptoms.

Since May 1st in Occitanie, 70 imported cases of dengue, 89 imported cases of chikungunya and 1 case of Zika have been reported to the ARS. Eleven indigenous cases of chikungunya have been confirmed. (Source: Public Health France]

A rapid response to limit the risk of local spread

In order to avoid the spread of the virus at the local level, immediate preventive measures have been deployed around potential transmission areas in the commune of Poulx.

Investigations are currently continuing, and a door-to-door operation will be organized next week to identify any new cases. Other potential transmission sites could be the subject of preventive actions depending on the progress of the ongoing investigation. These actions are coordinated by government services, the ARS Occitanie, Public Health France, and Altopictus, the ARS mosquito control operator, in conjunction with local healthcare professionals.

These include in particular:

Entomological surveys to identify the presence of tiger mosquitoes around the places where the sick person passed.

Targeted mosquito control operations aim to eliminate breeding sites and adult mosquitoes in the affected areas. Local residents are informed in advance of these operations.

Increased awareness among the population around the affected areas, carried out jointly by Public Health France and the ARS,

Awareness-raising among local health professionals to strengthen the reporting of any new suspected cases.

People who have visited the commune of Poulx and who have shown signs suggestive of chikungunya since the beginning of June are invited to consult their doctor.

It is also advisable to protect yourself from mosquito bites by using skin repellent and mosquito nets for babies and bedridden people.

The fight against the tiger mosquito - a potential vector of disease - relies on the mobilization of everyone and the adoption of good reflexes to eliminate mosquito larvae:

Eliminate areas where water can stagnate,

Change the water in plants and flowers at least once a week or, if possible, remove or fill the saucers in flower pots with sand,

Check that water flows properly and clean regularly: gutters, manholes, channels,

Cover water tanks (water drums, cisterns, basins) with a mosquito net or simple fabric, cover small swimming pools that are no longer in use,

Eliminate adult mosquito resting places: clear and trim tall grass.

Press release - An indigenous case of chikungunya detected in Charente (16) on 07/08/2025

Press release
August 7, 2025

Visuel_Communique_Presse_V2_678_454.png.jpg

An indigenous case of chikungunya was detected in Charente, and was confirmed by the Arbovirosis National Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CNR) on August 6. The person resides in Val-de-Cognac. Their health status is not a cause for concern.

Immediate measures have been implemented to limit any risk of spread.

This new indigenous case confirms the existence of a risk of transmission of this virus in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. To date, this is the third episode of transmission identified in the region, after those in Landes and Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

Field actions to stop the spread of the virus

To prevent the spread of the disease, the Charente-Maritime departmental council (the operator of entomological monitoring of the tiger mosquito in Charente) carried out an initial mosquito control operation in Val de Cognac on the night of August 4 to 5, followed by home surveys aimed at eliminating larval breeding sites and adult mosquitoes that can transmit the virus.

In addition, a door-to-door survey will be carried out by the ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Santé publique France, in collaboration with the town hall of Val-de-Cognac, in order to identify people who have experienced symptoms in the previous weeks or who currently have symptoms suggestive of chikungunya (fever above 38.5°C, joint pain, rash, fatigue, muscle pain) and inform them on what to do.

Finally, hospitals, private doctors, pharmacists and medical analysis laboratories in the sector are also mobilizing to care for, screen and remind people who may present symptoms of chikungunya of preventive measures.
Adopt the right actions to protect yourself and your loved ones
  1. Protect yourself from mosquito bites
    It is recommended:
    1. To install mosquito nets for newborns or bedridden people;
    2. To wear covering and loose clothing;
    3. Use a fan to keep mosquitoes away.
    In the area concerned (commune of Val-de-Cognac), it is recommended to apply a skin repellent, particularly in the morning and at the end of the day, after having consulted your pharmacist on the product to use.
  2. Prevent the proliferation of mosquitoes
    It is necessary to eliminate stagnant water in which mosquitoes develop, by following simple and effective steps to be carried out once a week:
    1. Empty plant pots and anything that retains small amounts of water (garden furniture, tarpaulins, etc.);
    2. Store away from the rain anything that may contain water (children's toys, buckets, watering cans);
    3. Seal water containers tightly or cover them with mosquito netting.
    The ARS Nouvelle-Aquitaine monitors the tiger mosquito and mobilizes communities to combat its proliferation by adopting appropriate measures. Each year, it broadcasts a communication campaign "No quarter for mosquitoes" and provides town halls with a dedicated platform (prevention tools, social mobilization actions, etc.): Tiger Mosquito - Health Environment Nouvelle-Aquitaine .
  3. Consult your doctor immediately if you experience any symptoms: high fever, joint or muscle pain, fatigue, headache, skin rash.
Chikungunya: increased surveillance in France

Between May 1 (start of enhanced surveillance) and August 5, 2025, the following were identified in mainland France:
  1. 16 outbreaks of indigenous chikungunya transmission (1 to 13 cases per outbreak)
  2. 5 outbreaks of indigenous dengue transmission (1 to 3 cases per outbreak);
  3. 892 imported cases of chikungunya;
  4. 698 imported cases of dengue fever;
  5. 3 imported cases of Zika.
The ARS and Public Health France recall the importance of reporting cases which allows for rapid intervention aimed at limiting the indigenous transmission of the disease .

Chikungunya: more than 60 indigenous cases recorded in mainland France

By Stanislas Deve

The chikungunya virus is now circulating locally in several regions of France. Authorities are calling for stronger preventive measures against the tiger mosquito.

Published on 07.08.2025 at 1:25 p.m. |

As the chikungunya epidemic ends in Réunion and continues in Mayotte, the virus is gaining ground in mainland France. For the first time, several regions of France are recording autochthonous cases, i.e., cases contracted locally, without prior travel to a contaminated area. Should we fear a wider epidemic?

An unprecedented local transmission

According to the latest report from Public Health France dated August 6, 63 indigenous cases have been recorded since June, compared to 49 a week earlier. The health agency warns: "The number of transmission hotspots illustrates the significant risk of indigenous transmission of these viruses in mainland France. Other cases will likely be identified, including outside the usual transmission zones."

Three major outbreaks have been identified: in Bouches-du-Rhône (16 cases), in Corse-du-Sud (13 cases), and in Hérault (12 cases). But the viral disease has also affected Drôme, Alpes-Maritimes, Isère, Gard, Var, Bas-Rhin, Landes, and Pyrénées-Atlantiques. "Such an early start to the mosquito's activity season and such a high number of episodes have never been observed before," Public Health France emphasized in a previous report. In total, since the beginning of 2025, more than 1,800 cases – imported and indigenous – have been recorded in mainland France, compared to around thirty in the previous two years.

Chikungunya, transmitted by the tiger mosquito ( Aedes albopictus ), presents with high fever and sometimes debilitating muscle and joint pain, particularly in the wrists, fingers, or ankles. Other symptoms include headaches, conjunctivitis, rashes, and swollen lymph nodes. While most patients recover within a week, about 20% may experience persistent pain.

Mosquitoes: essential barrier gestures

Two vaccines are available. Vimkunya, authorized in February 2025 in Europe, is recommended for travelers to high-risk areas, particularly those aged 12-65 with comorbidities. For others, vaccination should be "considered ." The Ixchiq vaccine, meanwhile, was reauthorized for those over 65 in July, after being suspended following reports of serious side effects in Réunion, including three deaths.

In the absence of widespread vaccination, prevention remains essential. In other words, protect yourself from bites by wearing loose, covering clothing, using repellents, and installing mosquito nets. But also by removing all stagnant water, which is conducive to the breeding of tiger mosquitoes.

First case of indigenous chikungunya detected in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Press release
August 8, 2025

CP-DP_678x454_0.jpg.jpg

An indigenous case of chikungunya was confirmed on August 8 in Dijon, the first in the BFC region. The health of the infected person does not give cause for concern. A second indigenous case, linked to the first, is also strongly suspected. Preventive actions and control measures are being implemented reactively in specific areas to avoid any risk of spread.

A case of chikungunya was reported to the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Regional Health Agency (ARS) and confirmed on August 8. The person, residing in Dijon, had not stayed in an area where the virus was actively circulating in the two weeks preceding the symptoms, this is a case having acquired the infection locally (so-called indigenous case), the first in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.

A second indigenous case is strongly suspected . It concerns a person also living in Dijon, was declared on August 5, and remains to this day awaiting confirmation by the National Reference Center for Arboviruses.

Furthermore, since May 1 [SUP],[/SUP] 2025, Public Health France has recorded 35 imported cases of chikungunya in the region, including one within the area of the two current cases. The imported cases concern people who have traveled to contaminated areas.

Nationally, more than 960 cases of chikungunya were recorded by Public Health France over the same period, including 72 indigenous cases (Provence-Alpes-Côte-d'Azur, Corsica, Occitanie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Grand Est and Nouvelle Aquitaine) and nearly 900 imported cases.

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected tiger mosquito. It typically presents with a sudden onset of fever, often accompanied by intense joint pain and a rash. In some cases, joint symptoms can last from a few weeks to several years, especially if the patient is older.

Dozens of cases of chikungunya in a single small neighborhood of Vitrolles

Gabin Grulet
Broadcast on Monday, August 25, 2025 at 7:31 AM
Published on Monday, August 25, 2025 at 7:31 AM

In Vitrolles (Bouches-du-Rhône), in the Ferme de Croze neighborhood, 33 people have contracted chikungunya, according to the latest count from the PACA Regional Health Agency. At the national level, Public Health France announced last Wednesday that it had identified 154 cases, a record.

Chikungunya cases are reaching record highs in metropolitan France, with 154 cases nationwide, according to Public Health France. In Vitrolles, 33 people have contracted the virus, transmitted by the tiger mosquito, according to the Regional Health Agency (ARS). All live in the small neighborhood of Ferme de Croze. Most cases have been identified in nearby streets.

An affected resident testifies: "I'm very weak ," Caroline confides as she opens her gate. There are still dark circles under her eyes : "I have to rest as soon as I do something ." The 45-year-old woman remembers being bitten in early August right outside her house. Four days later, she felt the first symptoms.

The disease of the bent man

"I woke up with my ankles, knees and wrists frozen, impossible to move them," says the resident. Chikungunya is also called "bent man disease." Caroline confirms: " So you walk with your legs apart, rocking from side to side ." At first, the forty-year-old thought it was aches and pains, fatigue, stress. She was unaware of the symptoms of chikungunya .

But then a document from the Regional Health Agency (ARS) arrives in her mailbox: the first cases have been detected in the neighborhood. Caroline recognizes all the symptoms. The test confirms that she has contracted chikungunya. She must stay indoors for a week to avoid being bitten again by a tiger mosquito, which could then transmit the disease to others.

"I don't go out onto my terrace anymore."

The resident then installed mosquito nets at her neighbor Michelle's house. This 71-year-old retiree confides: "It's scary, it's a real anxiety to get bitten. As soon as I go outside, I look, I don't even go out onto my terrace anymore ." It must be said that the tiger mosquito is vicious: small, silent, it often bites at ankle level . Michelle has no symptoms, she protects herself.

Caroline, for her part, is going on vacation with a plan to relax. She even sees the positive side: " At least I'm immune! " Like chickenpox, chikungunya can only be caught once.

Henri Porte, deputy for Health at the Vitrolles town hall and doctor, nevertheless wants to be reassuring about the danger of the virus: " It is not a fatal disease , but it depends on the person. Elderly people, who have pathologies, can have complications . "

Mosquito control and prevention

Vitrolles town hall assures that the situation is "under control." The cases are all recorded in the same neighborhood; they are not spreading, particularly because a tiger mosquito can only fly about a hundred meters. Hence the need to carry out targeted mosquito control operations as quickly as possible. There have already been four in the neighborhood. Olivier Reilhes, director of public health at ARS Paca, says: "It's a bit like forest fires; every time we intervene quickly and forcefully, it limits the spread."

The ARS also reminds us that we must remove anything containing stagnant water from our homes , parks and gardens: vases, saucers, rainwater collectors, etc. Cases of chikungunya have also been recorded in Salon-de-Provence and Lambesc.

In total, according to the ARS, 66 people have contracted chikungunya in the PACA region and six cases of dengue fever have also been recorded.

Chikungunya: 15 indigenous cases confirmed in Dordogne

Fifteen indigenous cases of chikungunya have been recorded in Bergerac (Dordogne), the Regional Health Agency reported on Monday, August 25. This is a first in the department.

Ouest France
Published on08/26/2025 at 10:31 a.m.

The Regional Health Agency (ARS) confirmed the presence of 15 indigenous cases of chikungunya, transmitted by the bite of the tiger mosquito , in Bergerac (Dordogne) on Monday, August 25, 2025. In mid-August, the first 4 cases were detected. Several mosquito control operations were then carried out in the Costes district.

A first in the department

An indigenous case is defined as a person "contracted the disease on national territory and did not travel to a contaminated area in the 15 days preceding the onset of symptoms," the ARS specifies. The 15 people were therefore infected with chikungunya in France, and not during a vacation abroad. This is the first time that indigenous cases have been recorded in the department.

Transmission up to 7 days after the first symptoms

In the event of suggestive symptoms such as high fever, joint or muscle pain, fatigue, headaches, or a rash, the ARS recommends consulting a doctor directly.

"If a tiger mosquito bites you while you are sick, and then bites another person, it can transmit your disease to them, and you could thus contaminate those around you (family, colleagues, friends)," she adds. The Regional Health Agency also specifies that a sick person can transmit the virus to mosquitoes up to the 7th day after the appearance of the first symptoms, even if these symptoms disappear.
