Didier Brune does not lose his temper. Monday, November 13, his 98-year-old father, welcomed into the establishment, is doing better. He fell ill after a meal on October 31. For three days, it was impossible to see him and the information was fragmentary. “The official information from the director was just gastro ,” says Didier Brune.
A complaint filed
The establishment says it fears an epidemic and asks families to postpone their visits. The families will finally be informed of the extent of the tragedy through the press, five days after the poisoning. The manager of the establishment then spoke of an appropriate period of time to understand the causes and assured that she was not responsible for preparing meals. In a press release, the service provider indicates: “We are fully cooperating with the authorities. (…) Health and safety are our top priority.” A complaint was filed by the family of a deceased resident.

The establishment remains under the sign of mourning. A fourth resident of the Pleine-Fougères nursing home ( Ille-et-Vilaine ) died, probably as a result of food poisoning which occurred at the end of October , the prosecution announced on Sunday evening. “I confirm the death of the resident of the nursing home who was hospitalized,” said Saint-Malo prosecutor Fabrice Tremel, confirming information from the daily Ouest-France .
Friday evening, the magistrate announced the opening of an investigation into involuntary manslaughter and involuntary injuries after the death of three residents in this nursing home located not far from Mont-Saint-Michel . A fourth resident was still hospitalized at the time. It was she who died, according to the magistrate.
Origin of the “proven” pathology
In a press release, the magistrate mentioned a probable “food poisoning”, having affected forty residents and staff of the establishment on the night of October 30 to 31. According to Ouest-France, the management of the Les Marais residence confirmed that the “food origin” of the pathology was “now proven”.
Contacted by AFP, the establishment did not immediately respond. Asked about this specific point, the prosecutor did not respond. The investigation was entrusted to the Saint-Malo research brigade, the Central Office for the fight against attacks on the environment and public health and the National Veterinary and Phytosanitary Investigation Brigade.
According to Public Health France , a “collective food poisoning” is diagnosed as such when at least two cases present similar symptoms and “the cause of which can be linked to the same food origin”.
The most common symptoms are gastrointestinal (“diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, nausea…”), and can sometimes be “accompanied by fever”. “Other symptoms may also be reported such as allergic reactions or neurological manifestations,” adds SPF.
Since 2012, around 1,200 to 1,800 TIACs have been notified each year in France. They affect, on average, 10,000 to 16,000 people each year. Around 6% of cases “require hospitalization or a visit to the emergency room”.
