After three cases recorded in Finistère , avian influenza contamination was detected on a farm in Moréac (Morbihan) on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. I had confirmation this Thursday, explains Laurent Kerlir, president of the Morbihan Chamber of Agriculture. Depopulation began today.

Two to three days of depopulation

It is a herd of 27,500 laying hens that must be slaughtered. The operation must continue tomorrow, or even the day after. It takes two or three days of depopulation. Even if these animals were close to departure, it always has a strong psychological impact, continues the president of the chamber. It is a difficult time, we are with the breeders. We try to support.

A perimeter of protection zones (3 km around the outbreak) and a surveillance perimeter (10 km) are established. There, our vigilance is maximum. We ask that biosecurity be well respected. It is a dense area. Thirteen farms are located within the perimeter of the 3 km of close protection. A figure that rises to around fifty farms within the perimeter of 10 km.

It is also in this sector that, two years in a row, in 2022 and 2023, a turkey farm in Moréac was affected .

Two new HPAI outbreaks have just been declared in farms this Friday, October 26 in Morbihan (56), bringing the number of HPAI outbreaks to 8 since the start of the 2024-2025 season.

The two farms are vaccinated duck farms (a fattened duck farm and a meat duck farm) located in the commune of Noyal-Muzillac , located in the Coastal Protection Zone.

In order to prevent the circulation of the virus, a 3 km protection zone and a 10 km surveillance zone have been set up (details of the communes in the press release).

A new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) has just been confirmed, this November 2, 2024, in a poultry farm in Evellys in Morbihan. Depopulation is underway. An epidemiological investigation is being conducted to find the probable origin of the contamination.

In order to prevent the introduction of the virus into livestock farms, the Morbihan prefect has decided to extend the regulated protection and surveillance zone within a radius of 3 and 10 km around contaminated establishments.

• The municipalities concerned within a 3 km radius around the contaminated establishments are: MOREAC, EVELLYS, PLUMELIAU-BIEUZY, REGUINY.
• The municipalities wholly or partly concerned by the 10 km zone, in addition to the 4 municipalities mentioned above, are: BIGNAN, buleon, CREDIN, KERFOURN, LANTILLAC, LOCMINE, moustoir-ac, guenin, la chapelle-neuve, noyal-pontivy, pleugriffet, plumelin, radenac, saint-allouestre, saint-thuriau

In this area, two axes of epidemiological surveillance are set up:

• On wildlife

The services of the French Biodiversity Office (OFB), supported by the departmental federation of hunters, are responsible for monitoring the collection of wild birds found dead for analysis, using the network for monitoring the causes of mortality in wild animals (SAGIR network).
In the event that the carcasses of wild birds are not handed over to the authorities, they must be taken care of by the town hall of the municipality which will make them available for rendering.

• About poultry farms and bird keepers

A census is carried out of all places of detention of poultry , commercial or non-commercial farms, and other captive birds in connection with the town halls. The surveillance and monitoring of agricultural holdings is carried out by health veterinarians who will carry out a systematic visit.

• Gatherings of poultry or other captive birds such as fairs, markets and exhibitions are prohibited in protection zones and surveillance zones.

• The placement and movement of poultry, day-old chicks and hatching eggs from the farm is prohibited in the protection zone and surveillance zone.

In general, and in order to limit the spread of the virus, which can have significant economic consequences, professionals in the poultry sector, like individuals who own poultry, are reminded to strictly respect biosecurity measures throughout the department and to remain extremely vigilant.

The prefect therefore reminds everyone of the barrier gestures in order to limit the transmission of the virus between animals:

• Avoid all contact with wild birds including feathers and droppings,

• Do not pick up or touch wild, sick or dead birds,

• Do not come into contact with domestic birds.

Know the right reflexes

In this context, the discovery of the carcasses of wild birds or sick birds must be reported immediately to the town hall of the place of discovery and to the SAGIR network on 02 97 47 02 83

The carcasses must not be handled and any person potentially in contact with birdlife (hunter, walker, forester, farmer or other) must take all precautions to avoid introducing the virus into the domestic compartment.

For operators or individuals , if abnormal mortality is observed, the holder is invited to immediately contact their veterinarian or the departmental directorate for population protection at the following address: ddpp-spa@morbihan.gouv.fr

For all other questions, individuals with a poultry yard or ornamental birds can contact their town hall.

France has been at “moderate” risk for HPAI since October 16, 2024.

REMINDER: The consumption of meat, foie gras and eggs – and more generally any food product made from poultry – does not present any risk to humans .
