Gers: After the suspicion of two cases of bird flu, 10,800 ducks slaughtered

febr 5, 2018

At the end of last week, health authorities slaughtered more than 10,000 ducks in the Gers after suspicion of two cases of bird flu ...

Two farms of Sainte-Dode and Sarraguzan, two communes halfway between Auch and Tarbes, had to take down their ducks pre-emptively after the suspicion of the presence of the H5N3 virus indicated the Gers prefecture. That's a total of 10,800 animals.

Poorly pathogenic
It is the professional self-checks made compulsory since 1 December 2017 that have detected the presence of the H5N3 avian influenza virus.

In a preventive way, "a zone of restriction of movements of 3km around these farms was also set up by the Prefect of Gers, ie 6 communes concerned. In order to avoid possible contamination of other farms, the sites were depopulated on the spot ", indicate the services of the State, for which this strain does not have exceptional or alarming character. They are unrelated to H5N1 and H5N8, which are much more virulent, leading to mass slaughter in 2016 and 2017, and the crawl space that followed.

The results of the analyzes showed that the virus was weakly pathogenic. The perimeter was reduced to 1 km around the two sites last Friday.

Another farm under surveillance
"Out of more than 1,000 self-tests of batches of animals detected in 32 departments, 3 were positive for H5, a positivity rate of 0.3%. The identified viruses have all been confirmed as low pathogenic. A suspicion, dated January 31, of the same nature concerning a breeding close to the previous one (10 200 ducks) is treated according to the same modalities. The results of the analyzes are expected at the end of the week ", indicates the prefecture of Gers.
