PARIS (Reuters) - The number of people in intensive care units (ICU) for coronavirus infection in France fell slightly for the first time since the start of the epidemic, but the number of people dying in nursing homes jumped by more than 50 percent over two days, health ministry data showed on Thursday.

But in a sign that the epidemic is still raging through French senior citizen homes, ministry data showed that the cumulative toll there jumped by 929 deaths, or 52%, to 4,166 over two days after a technical problem prevented the registration of deaths in nursing homes on Wednesday,

Including the deaths in hospitals, up by 412 or 5% to 8,044, the total death toll rose by 1,341 or 12% to 12,210 people, the world’s fourth-heaviest toll after Italy, Spain and the United States.

The ministry also reported that the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in hospitals rose by 4,286 or 5% to 86,334 while the number of confirmed, probable or possible cases in nursing homes rose by 513 or 2% to 31,415.

The total number of confirmed, probable or possible cases in hospitals and nursing homes - which the ministry does not report separately - increased by 4,799 or 4% to 117,749.

To estimate the number of coronavirus infections in nursing homes where patients show symptoms, France only tests a few residents.

France Coronavirus Deaths Fall for Second Day, ICU Cases Decline

11 april 2020

France’s coronavirus-linked deaths slowed for a second day on Saturday and the number of intensive-care patients fell to the lowest in a week.

Coronavirus infections rose by 4,785 to 129,654, the smallest increase in three days, Director General for Health Jerome Salomon said at a briefing in Paris. Deaths since the start of the outbreak reached 13,832, an increase of 635 from the toll reported Friday.

“Now is not the time to end confinement,” Salomon said. “The pressure on hospitals remains very high.”

France took 3rd place for yesterday's casualties. With 13,832 deaths, its balance sheet is already more than 4 times heavier than that of a China at the end of the epidemic and almost 5 times that of Germany today. After forgetting, in the first ten days, to count the deaths in nursing homes, France honored itself by doing a catch-up on April 2 and by counting these deaths for ten days. However, the accounts are still not fully sincere.
Home deaths linked to Covid-19 are still not counted and patients who visit the hospital are often sent home until their condition is "considered cause for concern". A significant number of them end up dying there because they could not be taken care of soon enough.
Olivier Mazerolle's testimony at 1 pm TF1 on April 11 was instructive. At worst, but rejected by a first hospital which considered that his condition was not critical, he considers that he was saved, thanks to the insistence of his attending physician at a second hospital, who finally agreed to take care of it and treat it… with chloroquine. Thanks WHO?

France will not start to reopen until next month, Macron says.

France’s lockdown, which severely restricts movement and gatherings, will continue for at least four more weeks, until May 11, President Emmanuel Macron of France announced on Monday.

“The epidemic is not yet under control,” Mr. Macron said in a televised address.

May 11 will mark a major turning point in the fight against the coronavirus, he said, when schools will reopen and many people will be able to return to work.

But even as some restrictions are lifted or loosened, he warned, others will stay in place. Many businesses — like cafes, restaurants, museums or hotels — will remain closed, Mr. Macron said, and the most vulnerable citizens, like the elderly or the disabled, will remain confined, “at least initially.”

Deaths in France linked to coronavirus cases rose by 761 to 18,681 fatalities, Director General for Health Jerome Salomon said at a briefing in Paris. The number of reported infections rose by the least in five days to 168,241 cases.

France’s daily coronavirus figures have fluctuated amid inconsistent reporting from nursing homes, which were first included in the tally this month. Still, Friday’s numbers, which also showed a drop in the number of people hospitalized and in intensive care, showed some positive signs, Salomon said.

The country’s lockdown and the social distancing it requires “is starting to bear fruit,” Salomon said, even as he reiterated the virus continues to circulate at a high level.
