Avian Influenza H5N8 - Confirmed outbreak in backyard birds in the Department of the North

Updated on 01/07/2017

One case of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N8 was confirmed on 30 June 2017 in backyard birds located in the commune of Brillon in the department of Nord. To stop the spread of the virus as soon as possible, protection and surveillance zones are set up immediately within 3 and 10 kilometers of the fireplace. In these areas, movement of all susceptible animals is prohibited and biosecurity measures are strengthened.

The services of the departmental directorate for the protection of the populations were led to take a measure of preventive slaughter of poultry and birds held on this exploitation on Thursday 29 June. More than 230 animals were slaughtered.

The outbreak is located 15 kilometers from an outbreak identified on 23 June in Tournai, Belgium, in a non-commercial poultry farm. This outbreak would be linked to the purchase of chicks and pigeons on the Tournai market. Since the beginning of June, eleven cases of avian influenza have been confirmed in Belgium, mainly in breeders of ornamental poultry and four cases in Luxembourg.

On 23 June, the Directorate-General for Food of the Ministry in charge of Agriculture and Food asked the Prefect of the Border Departments with Belgium and Luxembourg to raise awareness among all poultry keepers They must exercise extreme vigilance and report any suspicious clinical signs to their veterinary surgeon.

The outbreak confirmed on 30 June 2017 in Brillon recalls the importance of protecting our poultry farms by applying enhanced biosecurity measures and, in particular, by ensuring that there is no contact between poultry and commercial farms.

It is important that all players in the poultry sector (professionals, amateurs, traders, transporters ...) remain mobilized to prevent any spread of the disease on our territory.
