AFFECTED POPULATION DESCRIPTION
Increase in mortality in a laying hen farm (15,000 out of 80,000). The farm is composed of two separate buildings (2 x 80,000). Depopulation is in progress in the outbreak and preliminary disinfection will be applied. An epidemiological investigation is being carried out. Movements of poultry and poultry products from farms keeping poultry in the protection and surveillance zones is prohibited. The origin of the infection is not known at this time.

While avian influenza viruses are actively circulating in Europe via migratory birds, France detected on November 26 an outbreak due to a highly pathogenic strain (HPAI) in a laying hen farm located in the town of Warhem, in the Nord department. The complete analysis of the virus strain is currently underway at the ANSES national reference laboratory.

This is the first breeding outbreak identified in France since the epizootic last winter. The suspicion of infection follows a finding of abnormal mortalities among poultry on the farm. Investigations are underway to identify the origin of the contamination.

In accordance with health management rules, surveillance and control measures were immediately taken:

• the home will be depopulated and disinfected without delay;
• a protection zone (3 km around the home) and a surveillance zone (10 km) have been set up by the Prefect, in accordance with the regulations. In order to control the risk of spreading the virus, the movement of poultry is prohibited in these areas where strict sanitary measures must be observed.

France has declared since the end of the summer four cases in wildlife (H5N1) and three cases in backyard (H5N8) on the metropolitan territory. In (geographic) Europe, 26 countries are now affected by influenza viruses, involving more than 400 outbreaks in breeding and 600 cases in wildlife.

Livestock stakeholders have been informed of the situation. Julien Denormandie, Minister of Agriculture and Food, calls on all professional sectors, hunters and individuals who own birds to strictly comply with protective measures against avian influenza and to report any suspicion without delay. , including abnormal mortalities in breeding, to the health authorities of their department.

The consumption of meat, fatty liver and eggs - and more generally of any food product made from poultry - does not present any risk for humans.
