SEVERAL CASES OF MENINGITIS DECLARED AMONG YOUNG ADULTS ON
STRASBOURG SINCE EARLY NOVEMBER 2022

The Grand Est Regional Health Agency has received several reports of invasive meningococcal infections (IMD) in young adults in Strasbourg and its agglomeration. The results of the epidemiological investigations indicate that 4 cases of IIM attended nocturnal festive places (discotheques, bars, etc.) in the inner city of Strasbourg, including the LIVE CLUB establishment.

At this stage, the ARS invites people who have regularly visited the festive places in this district for November 18 and in particular LIVE CLUB in Strasbourg, to monitor the symptoms suggestive of illness and, if in doubt, to call 15 urgently.

Reminder of suggestive signs
• severe headaches (headaches), sensitivity to light (photophobia);
• neck stiffness, body aches and fatigue;
• fever ;
• red or purplish spots under the skin (purpura) on the body;
• very severe pain in the stomach and nausea and/or vomiting.

Epidemiological investigations have made it possible to identify and treat as a preventive measure people with been in contact at risk. The ARS has raised the awareness of health professionals in the Strasbourg conurbation. It continues to analyze these situations, in conjunction with Public Health France, and remains mobilized on any other measures aimed at interrupting the chains of transmission.

Invasive meningococcal infections

There are several types of meningococci. The most common in France are group meningococci B, C, W and Y.

Meningococci are bacteria normally found in the throat and nose of many people. These bacteria can be transmitted through the air or through saliva.

Meningococcus does not survive in the external environment. Its transmission is human-to-human and requires a direct, close (less than 1 meter) and prolonged contact.

There are healthy carriers, who do not develop symptoms but can nevertheless transmit the bacterium.

Most often, meningococci do not cause any particular diseases, but in some cases they can cause very serious illnesses such as meningitis or septicemia.

Two symptoms should particularly alert:

• A poorly tolerated high fever
• And/or one or more rapidly appearing red or purplish spots (purpura)

The most severe form of IMI is purpura fulminans, characterized by septic shock and rapidly extensive purpura (red or purplish spots on the skin).

In the slightest doubt, contact urgently 15.

By Celine Rousseau

A fifth case of group B meningococcal meningitis has been identified in Alsace, warns the Grand Est regional health agency.
The authority recalls the need to be vaccinated if you have frequented nightlife in Strasbourg.

The regional health agency (ARS) of the Grand Est indicates Friday, December 14, that a fifth case of invasive group B meningococcal infection was reported. It is a woman in her fifties living in Colmar . She had to be hospitalized.
This case is added to the four cases of invasive group B meningococcal infection that occurred in the urban area of Strasbourg. One person died . This is again the same rare bacterial strain .

Vaccination recommended

The regional health agency recalls that a person can be a healthy carrier of the bacteria, without having symptoms, but can continue to transmit it to others. Vaccination is effective. It prevents the appearance of serious forms of the disease. The epidemiological investigations made it possible to identify and treat as a preventive measure with antibiotics the people who had been in contact at risk with this 5th case.

The ARS therefore recommends, once again, to the public frequenting nighttime festive places in the city center of Strasbourg and to the professionals of these places to be vaccinated, as soon as possible , against meningococcal B. Appointments are made via the Doctolib platform, in a dedicated city vaccination center located in the former neurology building, next to the IHU building (site of the new civil hospital in Strasbourg) or by going to their attending physician. Support is 100% free.

This sixth case follows those detected in December 2022. Four cases, including one fatal , were first reported on December 2. All had gone to the Live Club nightclub in the center of Strasbourg. A fifth case followed , on the side of Colmar this time, on December 16.

A vaccination campaign was launched on December 7 around bars, clubs and nightclubs in downtown Strasbourg. To get vaccinated against meningitis, you can make an appointment on Doctolib or by having the vaccine prescribed by your doctor.
