Four times as many flu cases than last year

FOUR times as many flu cases have already been reported in South Australia compared with the same time last year.

SA Health statistics show 172 cases of the infectious disease have been reported so far this year, compared with 40 at the same time in 2010.

Emeritus Professor of Virology at the University of Adelaide Chris Burrell said the unseasonably early wet weather and increased moisture in the air had allowed the bug to thrive.

"This year is a bit different to most years because we've had moisture around early," Prof Burrell said.

"What this means is that the upsurge that happens annually is coming earlier this year."

SA Health chief medical officer Paddy Phillips said it was important that people were vaccinated to protect themselves and their families from the virus...

WHO FluNet reports a continuing detection of influenza viruses out of season (see http://gamapserver.who.int/gareports/Default.aspx?ReportNo=1 ).
