FluTrackers Confirmed U.S. Deaths - June 5 - June 26, 2009

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Cook County only counts 4 deaths, so one of the reported deaths must not be official.

http://www.cookcountypublichealth.org/swine_flu

Press releases call Illinois #8 the second death in the county, and confirm #9 and #10, so one of the first two on our list is not counted.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

anyone want coffee? ;)

uh.....with a touch of cream, please.

hey, I seem to maybe recall that the IL state DOH may not have updated their list to reflect the death of that LaSalle County gal that was announced by the county DOH. If the state hasn't yet accepted her, then that might be the source of the discrepancy?

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

sorry, I misread this the first time. So that is the final answer from the reporter on the Michigan deaths, that the article is correct. So then it's up to us to decide between them, do we go with Michigan DOH website or the article for our locations?

hmmm....how about listing one of them as "Detroit/Oakland"?
the reporter left it open to get back to me if she heard any better clarification from her sources.
I guess, this might not make much difference if more deaths keep occurring.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Cook County only counts 4 deaths, so one of the reported deaths must not be official.

It seems that Chicago deaths are being reported separately by the city health dept, and all other Cook County deaths reported by them. #1 above was announced by the Chicago city health dept, and may not be included in Cook County's total.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Here is a crazy suspect case from late January 09....

http://www.kbtx.com/news/headlines/38458309.html

I included this in the early outbreak map here...

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=U....164126,-96.437988&spn=7.813009,10.524902&z=7
Sure sounds familiar now. I'm surprised the CDC isn't researching these types of cases. There might even be pathology samples in storage that could be tested for H1N1.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Chuck thank you for discovering the Cook County error. Just FYI, the details info that I put together on the original 30 or so U.S. deaths was organized off of one of the spreadsheets linked in this thread. so we may find more errors in the older info. I did some sleuthing on our Illinois #1 and #2 and they are the same person. (!) here are the articles that each of those were based on (article links are 404 now)....

Basis for Illinois Death #1

Chicago-area resident dies of swine flu
(Published May 25, 2009)

CHICAGO ? A Chicago-area resident is the first person in Illinois to die of swine flu.

Illinois Department of Public Health director, Dr. Damon Arnold, said Monday that the person who died had underlying medical conditions.

Arnold says the victim's family has requested privacy and no more information about the death would be released.

There have been 896 confirmed cases of swine flu in Illinois. Most have been mild. The virus has been blamed for a number of deaths in the United States.

Arnold advises people with underlying medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, lung disease and pregnancy to remain particularly cautious.

Basis for Illinois Death #2

Chicago swine flu victim was 22-year-old man

Tribune staff report
May 27, 2009
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-swine-flu-death-27-may27,0,3098768.story

Chicago public health officials said Tuesday that the person who became the first person in Illinois to die of swine flu was a 22-year-old Chicago man who had been hospitalized for about two weeks before dying Sunday.

The man died May 24 at a Chicago hospital where he had been admitted May 12, a day after showing signs of having contracted the H1N1 virus, said Tim Hadac, a spokesman for the Chicago Department of Public Health.

Officials refused to release the name of the man, the hospital where he died or his occupation. Hadac said officials do not know if the man had traveled abroad.

"I don't even think we're asking that question anymore because it is so widespread," Hadac said. "This virus is spreading everywhere in the city right now."

Hadac said authorities have checked with the man's relatives and other contacts and believe the man had not spread the virus to others.

my mistake, those 2 articles are references for Illinois Death #1. This is the article for Illinois #2

http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2009/05/illinois-records-2nd-swine-flu-death.html

Illinois records 2nd swine flu death
May 27, 2009 2:39 PM | 17 Comments
A second Illinois resident from the Chicago area has died from swine flu, according to the state Health Department.

The woman who died was a resident of northwest suburban Cook County, a spokeswoman for the Cook County Health Department said. She had "other significant medical conditions that increased vulnerability" to the H1N1 swine flu virus, the state health department said in a news release. Because of confidentiality and "out of respect for the family," the department said it will not be releasing details about the case.
The first death of swine flu in Illinois was reported on Monday, also in the Chicago area. The department released no details about that case, either, except that the person also had underlying medical conditions that put him or her at greater risk for the virus to become deadly.

So far, there have been 976 confirmed swine flu cases in the Illinois. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has tracked 7,927 confirmed cases in the United States, including 11 deaths--although the total number of deaths does not yet include the two in Illinois.
For further information on Illinois swine flu cases, go here. The CDC has a Web page on the outbreak here.

"Out of respect for the privacy of the affected family," the county will not be releasing information about the woman, said Amy Poore, a spokeswoman for the county health department.

Federal laws about the release of medical information, specifically the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, restrict the information available to the public regarding anyone treated for illness or injury, although there are exceptions made for public health reasons.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

the date on the article doesn't match up with any other Cook County or Chicago women, so I'm not sure what to do with this one. But if Cook County is only reporting 4 deaths, this one may have been retracted.

I think they absolutely did research this stuff heavily but are holding the details tight to the vest because it shows a US origin.

They still haven't followed up on their investigation into the contact between Patient Zero in San Diego and his brothers pig contact at the county fair the week before he became Ill in mid march. I doubt the results were positive, but they didn't tell us they were false either.

Re: Links - Updated U.S. Death Counts

As cutter wrote, Chicago deaths are not listed as Cook County deaths, so Illinois #1 would not be a Cook County reported death.

I was looking at the original article about the La Salle county death, and it states that they "received notification of our first death", which may mean that the death did not occur in La Salle county. Perhaps it was listed as one of the anonymous deaths reported in other states?

okay, this isn't that important, but since I'm laughing to myself, I thought I'd share it. so, what do you think of the possibility of low-level politics playing into all the Chicago/Illinois reporting confusion? any chance that all the various departments of health are more focused on maneuvering, than on straightforward communication? nahhh, not in CHICAGO. ;)
okay, it doesn't take much to amuse me.
carry on.

My guess is that they'll track down a number of these cases once the dust settles from the current stage of the outbreak. I think they are just hoping that the spread/deaths subsides during this NON-flu season, before the normal flu season resumes.

Looks like a 4th death in Washington.

Monitoring swine flu (H1N1): Hospitalizations and deaths

The state Department of Health has moved to a new strategy for monitoring swine flu (H1N1) and will no longer test all cases. As a result, there will be no daily updates of numbers of probable or confirmed cases by county. Updates will be posted on Friday afternoons at 3:00 p.m., and will include only the total number of hospitalized and fatal cases of lab-confirmed swine flu (H1N1) in Washington.

Hospitalizations and deaths in Washington
with lab-confirmed swine flu (H1N1)

Hospitalizations of Washington residents
Cumulative total 4/26 to 6/26
86

Deaths of Washington residents
As of 6/26/09

I don't know about La Salle, I'd have to go back and read that article too. But I could take "Cook County" off of the description for Illinois #1, then we would have the correct number of Cook County deaths - 4, but we would still have 13 total in Illinois... 1 too many.

I've gotta sign off for the night, so here are the details updated through today. Illinois is still wrong at 13, but I don't know what else to do with it.
