FluTrackers Begins Pandemic Communication Plan

Hi Everyone!

We have begun our Pandemic Communication Plan due to the Level 5 announced by WHO.

Part of this plan calls for automatic suspension for those participants who do not follow the rules at FT. It is a 30 day suspension.

We delayed starting this phase of our plan to determine if it was necessary. We have determined that it is. In the past 3 weeks we have seen bashing behaviors. This is not tolerated here. Also, some new users have decided to challenge some of our long standing rules against discussing violence, war, politics, religion, etc.

If you log on and can not post, you are one of these users and have been contacted by a moderator(s) several times previously. If you feel this is in error please contact me at ftcom@embarqmail.com

We are not going to change our rules or our culture here.

We need our energy to provide meaningful and pertinent information to the world.

We are a family here. We are most productive in a kind and loving environment. This is what we need.

How can we promote dignity for all peoples and all cultures if we do not practice this here?

Florida, you and the mods do a wonderful job of keeping this forum civil.

You are covering a topic that the whole world needs information on, and though the subject is enough to make most people pull their hair and scream in frustration, I've never found any forum as informative and open to the public as yours...

Although I'm new here, I moderate many other mailing lists and forums. Each has its own purpose, and when people post messages that fall outside that purpose, someone has to step in and get the discussions back on track. That's not censorship any more than calling a face-to-face meeting back to its stated purpose would be censorship. There are reasons for having rules, besides just enforcing ordinary civility. One of them is to keep discussions from being sidetracked by peripheral issues that don't pertain to the group. I applaud Florida1 and the other moderators for doing such a good job here.

The sensible rules and enforcement of them is what keeps this site a pleasant, safe place to visit.

I've found this site to be the most informative, friendly place on the internet. It's a place I always feel it's safe to land.

In my opinion, the subject matter provides enough drama without off-topic issues that stir people to behave inappropriately.

I appreciate this site and everyone here.

you could move to other rooms ("dungeon") instead of deleting\editing
you could restrict access to certain rooms instead of a full ban

I agree wholeheartedly.

There are thousands of other venues on the Internet where conspiracy theories, along with violence, war, politics, and religion can be debated.


Preventing that sort of activity here isn't censorship. It's just good stewardship.

And that is what makes working with FT a pleasure.

Many thanks to Florida1 and the others who work so hard to make FT what it is.

I looked around the site and couldn't find anything about the Pandemic Communication Plan (in conjunction with FT). Is it documented somewhere that I just haven't found? I assume it is more than increasing enforcement of the forum's rules.

Some people are trying to join again and again using multiple monikers. Some people are joining specifically to "troll" us.

We really do not have time for this.

We are at Level 3 for H5N1 and at Level 6 for Novel H1N1 on the WHO pandemic scale. An historic event.

The goal of a troll is to harangue and harass legitimate posters who are trying to present a specific point or position. Trolls relish the feedback.

So if there were only a forum for flu trolls nothing would be posted. Why? Because trolls don't enjoy trolling each other. They would rather pick on legitimate posters, most of whom would be smart enough to avoid posting in a troll forum.

I would like to know the difference between a real troll and fake troll. Maybe you would care to start such a forum so we can find out. :)

I am thinking, in 1918, 1957, 1968, there would have been millions of people
from around the world that would have welcomed a site such as this- so as to be able to obtain information that would have been factual and reliable, with the goal of that information being available to decrease mortality and morbidity during those pandemics.

Information that is factual and reliable is what drew me to this site. I wanted to know what was actually happening. I wanted information as to what was known and what was not known. Information that could provide resources as to how best to care for my family was what I needed. Information helping me to connect to community resources, impacting community resources, so as to be better able to meet the needs in caring for my family, friends, and community was very important to me. I believe, at this time, it is these things that continues to attract most individuals to the site and then keeps them returning.

Many are counting on the next wave coming to Northern Hemisphere is about 10 weeks. Already, the first wave is presenting with so many more unknowns than knowns. Should the virus return to NH in less than the 10 weeks, with anticipated increased transmissibility and increased virulence, time to either prepare and obtain resources for physical, medical, psychological, spiritual, economic needs is of the essence.

I thank Florida1, and all those instrumental in developing and maintaining this site, for information that remains reliable and factual. And for a site that also permits discussion and discourse in a manner that remains fair, open to questions, and civil in tone and manner.

A difficult time is at hand. A much more difficult time is anticipated in the days, weeks, and months ahead. Prepare. Prepare.
