Flu vaccine can help prevent undersized babies: Study

Vaccinating pregnant women against the flu protects their babies from being born too small, new research suggests.

Babies who are small for their gestational age have an increased risk of lifelong consequences. The new study, published Tuesday in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, suggests an influenza infection during pregnancy affects fetal growth.

The study was conducted by a team of U.S. and Bangladeshi researchers. In all, 340 healthy pregnant women in Bangladesh were put into two groups: one received an influenza vaccine, and the second received the pneumococcal vaccine as a "control."

Researchers compared the weight of babies born during flu season and when the flu virus wasn't circulating.

When flu virus wasn't circulating, there was no difference between mean birth weights and the proportion of babies small for their gestational age.
