Flu postpones Halloween in southern Labrador

Concerns about H1N1 have postponed Halloween in three Newfoundland and Labrador communities.

Children in the towns of Charlottetown, Lodge Bay and Mary's Harbour, all in Labrador, will have to wait until Nov. 6 or Nov. 7 to celebrate Halloween.

"There are a lot of kids sick who would not be able to participate in it, anyhow, and just the thought of having people going around to the houses where people have it," said Mary's Harbour resident Ford Rumbolt.

"I think it's the best thing to do."

Mary's Harbour town council, on the advice of Labrador Grenfell Regional

Health Authority officials, sent a public notice to residents advising them of the change.

The notice, signed by Mayor Larry Rumbolt, said that as of Oct. 29, more than 50 per cent of students were absent from class at St. Mary's all grade school with cold and flu-like symptoms.

Halloween will be celebrated in Mary's Harbour and Lodge Bay on Nov. 6.

It's scheduled to go ahead Nov. 7 in Charlottetown.

All 5 communities on the southeast coast postponed Halloween last weekend because of concerns over the H1N1 Flu virus. Charlottetown Deputy Mayor Lisa Dempster says they have a number of high risk children in the remote community, and with the nearest hospital in St. Anthony, they didn't want to take any chances. Dempster says all those in the communities who wanted to get the vaccine have now received it.</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
