HONG KONG, NNC - Hong Kong authorities, wrestling with seasonal flu epidemics, have decided to close all kindergartens and elementary schools since Thursday, just days before the Lunar New Year holiday, to control the spread of the disease.

On Monday, the seasonal flu killed 121 people, including two children, since the start of the year, according to the Health Department, which recorded 224 severe cases during that period.

The number of deaths and severe sufferers in the first three weeks of the season exceeds the past three months, according to statistics from the Center for Health Protection...

The Center for Health Protection recorded eight adult flu patients as serious cases on Monday, Oriental Daily reported, adding that 452 serious cases have been recorded so far this year.
On the first day that schools reopened after the Lunar New Year holiday, two kindergartens recorded flu outbreaks, with eight children affected.
So far, 13 of 15 children diagnosed as serious flu cases have been discharged from hospitals. Two children died from the influenza B virus.

On Monday, 6,069 patients required emergency service in public hospitals. The inpatient bed occupancy rate among all public hospitals reached 115%, while United Christian Hospital in Kwun Tong was the worst in bed supply.

Flu outbreaks in local schools have been continuing and from March 4 to 10, a total of 44 kindergartens and primary schools recorded flu outbreaks, twice the number of the previous week.

She had not been vaccinated against flu, and had had a fever, a cough and a runny nose since Tuesday. In the week ending March 10, there were 44 flu outbreaks at kindergartens and primary schools, three times more than the 13 of the previous week, the centre said in its latest flu surveillance report.
A kindergarten in Tsing Yi reported an influenza B outbreak on Thursday, affecting 20 students.
The centre urged parents to keep sick children out of school.
