Flu Outbreak at Pueblo Charter School

PUEBLO - The first day of school Tuesday was not a good one for the Pueblo School for the Arts and Sciences. According to a published report, 72 students missed part or all of the day because of flu-like symptoms. It's unclear whether the illness is the H1N1, or "swine flu."

Reportedly, 47 students stayed home, and 25 went home during the day. Some school staff apparently also went home. Symptoms were described as fevers between 100 and 102 degrees, headaches and stomach aches.

District 60 officials plan to send letters to parents Wednesday explaining how flu shots will be administered next month, and how to prevent the spread of the flu. According to the report, the school--which has preschool through eighth grade--has been open nearly two weeks as faculty and staff prepared for the semester, and that has helped the illness to spread.

There has been no word from District 60 about other changes at the school because of the situation. NEWSCHANNEL 13 will track this story for you throughout the day.

Tests are being done and those results are expected in the next few days. 11 News will have more information from the health department by 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Pueblo County Health Department says there are three confirmed cases of the H1N1 swine flu confirmed at two Pueblo schools.

Health department officials say three children, one at Goodnight Elementary and two at the Pueblo School of Arts and Sciences, have come down with H1N1.

Those children are not at school. The schools are remaining open.

There will be a briefing Monday at 2 p.m. for health department employees regarding procedures and prevention with the H1N1 swine flu.

Just last week, more than 100 kids were absent from PSAS. Forty-seven students stayed home sick on Monday and another 25 were sent home after developing flu-like symptoms during the day. Tuesday, a total of 90 students were absent from school, nearly a quarter of the school's population. Eight more were sent home Tuesday after showing flu-like symptoms and three students didn't attend school at all, simply because their parents didn't want them exposed to other students who may be sick.
