If this is to continue, there will be many dead or permanently injured from this doctrine..
As has now been disclosed, not only are pregnant woman at high risk.. disabled children may be at even higher risk.

A DeKalb County special needs school closed Wednesday for two days after nearly half of its students and six staff members complained of flu-like symptoms.
Julie Ramm, a spokeswoman for the district, said that 23 of Margaret Harris Comprehensive School?s 50 students, including 15 with confirmed flu symptoms, were out sick. Five of the school?s staff members, including principal Cheryl Rhodes, were also reported ill.



?One child was hospitalized but we don?t know if it?s H1N1,? said Ramm.
Parents were notified of the closure in a letter sent home at the end of the school day Wednesday, she said. The school will re-open on Monday.
Meanwhile, Ramm said, the district will take the next couple of days to sanitize the building.

Sebelius: Closing schools wouldn't ward off virus

WASHINGTON ? Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Tuesday that a massive school closing wouldn't stop the spread of the swine flu virus, saying vaccinations must be the defense against a menace that one report said could infect up to half of the population.

"What we know is that we have the virus right now traveling around the United States," Sebelius said in a nationally broadcast interview. "And having children in a learning situation is beneficial ... Let me post another story of handicapped children sick or dying from h1n1 school policy.. These or any child do not deserve to be thrown to the wolf of preventable disease.

Agreeably Trey! I really must personally wonder how 4-days is anywhere near sufficient enough time before re-opening, and before determining how many of these special needs kids, their siblings, and their parents have been exposed and will come down sick. Not to mention 17-day fomite transmission, OR a major school clean-up.

How easy and how long does it take to teach a disabled child a simple task such as hand washing or cough etiquette?

This fall is an optimum time to teach the child with special needs about good health and hygiene practices to avoid catching everything from the common cold to the H1N1 flu. Of course, even healthy practices are not a guarantee that a child will not become ill, but cleanliness is helpful in avoiding illness.


Consider the Special Needs Child’s Communication

If the child uses a picture system or sign language for best communication, be sure to use it. Always choose to communicate in a way that is clearly understandable to the child. Perhaps a chart can be used to record the child's successes at implementing these practices. (See rewards below.)

Explain the expectations. For example, hand washing should be done with an antibacterial soap and water and should continue for at least 20 seconds. The child with special needs can use this time to practice reciting the ABCs, counting 1-25, or singing a short song. Older kids with developmental delays enjoys getting two things done at once. The parent asks an agreed up number of study questions, such as vocabulary words, spelling words, or math facts. When the child has answered the questions, the hand washing time is complete.
Demonstrate How to Wash Hands and Blow the Nose

Many children with limited language skills learn best from demonstration. Demonstrate hand washing (as described above) as well as sneezing and coughing in to the elbow. In the case of using a tissue, the child should be taught to wash his hands afterwards. Again, the best teacher is example. This is true many times over with the child who struggles with understanding verbal directions.


Reinforce Healthy Habits of the Disabled Child

Plan ahead how to reward the child with a disability as he displays healthy, germ-fighting habits. Naturally, the goal is for the practices to become intrinsic. However, a long period of reinforcement may be needed to reach that goal

yes, Snowey, it is PAST time. So the lady from the first story just has no clue "whatever it is"..
If a spokeswoman from the district has no clue what is, in phase 6 pandemic, or feels she should lie and play it down, "whatever this is", then the CDC is not doing it's job The public at large is not being PROPERLY served by its health dept. if not her then WHO is to blame for her ignorance?

Oh, no! Not long enough. I read in one of the 1918 NYT articles about Copeland telling people to stay home at least 3 more days after they felt they were recovered. He observed that really improved outcomes. People that went back to work sooner crashed again badly.

Of course he knew many people had to go back to work, but I wish they were keeping this school closed longer if the children are at high risk.

Couldn't agree more with you Treyfish! There is just no excuse for this kind of ignorance at this point. Are these people stupid or do they just think we're all stupid?

I appreciate the "Dead Children" thread too, much as I hate it. Now I have something to print out for my son's baseball coach when I hand him the huge bottle of Purell. He gave me that look the other day like I have 2 heads when I asked him to have each boy clean their hands once in the dugout.
