The China Post news staff--The flu epidemic is becoming increasingly dangerous and may come to a head around the Chinese New Year holidays, a health official warned yesterday.
The number of people afflicted with influenza complications will steadily increase next week, Chou Jih-haw (周志浩), deputy director-general of the Department of Health's Center for Disease Control (CDC), warned yesterday, calling on the people to be on guard, especially against B-type influenza.
The CDC has asked the DOH's Bureau of Medical Affairs (BMA) to offer a more convenient special outpatient service during the New Year Holidays at the country's major hospitals and DOH-run hospitals for people who have come down with influenza-like symptoms.
The number of confirmed cases of influenza has come to 223 and a total of nine persons have died of the disease since July 1, including the single fatality and 35 new cases reported last week, CDC said yesterday, adding 150 cases had been found to be B-type influenza.
