Flu Hits Mt. Pleasant School District Hard
Updated: Oct 2, 2009 04:53 PM CDT
The flu is having a major impact in Mount Pleasant, Iowa. A large chunk of the student body at the High School has been out sick this week. It peaked on Wednesday when 195 students of the 680 high school students. By Friday, 125 students were absent.
School Superintendent John Roederer says the district has been in contact with the Henry County Health Department and health officials strongly suspect it is an outbreak of the H1N1 flu because the seasonal flu has not arrived yet. Also, no teachers or staff members have gotten sick, which usually is not the case with seasonal flu.
School administrators are following CDC guidelines and urging parents to keep sick kids home. Roederer says parents have kept calm and are handling to situation very well.
Meanwhile, it appears to be spreading. 70 students at the middle school were out sick Friday and there were reports of flu-like illnesses at four Mt. Pleasant elementary schools.
