Flu fears shouldn?t prevent school activities: officials

Government officials said yesterday that despite the spread of the A(H1N1) virus, all school activities should be conducted normally as long as students and staff follow health management practices.
?The flu should not affect normal extra-curricular activities like commencement trips or camping, and all school authorities should strictly follow self-health management procedures such as checking temperatures daily, wearing masks, disinfecting hands with ethyl alcohol and maintaining close contact with hospitals in case of emergency,? Minister of Education Wu Ching-chi (吳清基) told reporters.
The ministry has asked kindergartens, elementary, junior and senior high schools to adhere to its guidelines and suspend classes if two students in the same class are diagnosed with swine flu within three days of each other.
Meanwhile, Vice Premier Eric Chu (朱立倫), in his capacity as head of the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC), said that despite the spread of the swine flu virus around the country, school activities and field studies should go ahead as usual.
The CECC said six more people have been hospitalized nationwide with the A(H1N1) virus, bringing the total number of such cases to 228 as of yesterday. The six new cases range in age from seven to 82; four are males and two are females, the center said.
It said most of the hospitalized cases, 54, were people in the 25 to 49 age group, followed by 47 cases among elementary students.
Fourteen people have died from the virus in this country, while 52 remained hospitalized and 162 have recovered and been discharged.
