South-west Bulgaria declares flu epidemic


Regions in southwest Bulgaria are declaring a flu epidemic because of a drastic increases in cases of people with respiratory problems on January 19 2011, Bulgarian National Television (BNT) reported.

The city of Blagoevgrad, and the town of Petrich near the Koulata-Promachon border crossing point with Greece, have declared the emergency, a day after a flu epidemic was declared in the region of Sofia.

Those most affected by the strain are children aged five to 14, followed by people aged 15-29. Pupils away from school because they are ill currently account for 18 to 22 per cent of the total number. Schools have taken necessary "pre-emptive and preventative measures", but have not suspended classes.

Schools in the region will be closed if more than 25 per cent of the students report ill. The flu is usually accompanied by high fever, and according to medical authorities, those affected should seek professional assistance and not attempt any home treatment. As was the case last season, doctors say that the most effective preventative measures against the flu are meticulous attention to personal hygiene.

The report does not mention the H1N1 strain, otherwise known as swine flu, although medical authorities in Bulgaria previously did not rule out the risk of swine flu.

An influenza epidemic will be declared in Sofia on January 22 2011, the Sofia Regional Inspectorate for health care has announced, cited by Dnevnik daily.

"The influenza is showing a clear tendency to spread," the medical authorities said.

According to the report, between January 10-16, the contagion increased to 155 registered patients for every 10 000 of the population, and that the rates are rising increasingly, reaching epidemic levels, Dnevnik daily reported.

The National Reference Laboratory said that about 30 per cent of the patients in Sofia are confirmed with A (H1N1) influenza, Dnevnik reported.

Starting on January 22, medical establishments will stop all consultations for children and women, as well as preventive examinations and vaccinations, the report said.

Sofia municipality was the first to declare an emergency on January 18, followed by Blagoevgrad, and Petrich, earlier on January 19.

Subsequently, Dupnitsa, Rila and Kocherinovo said that the level of respiratory infections in their respective regions had escalated and reached epidemic proportions. Subsequently, the influenza has been spreading in other regions across Bulgaria.

Medical authorities say that people should be washing their hands frequently with soap and water, shield the mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing with a hand, and avoid contact with unwashed hands.

A flu epidemic has been declared in Bulgaria's regions of Shumen and Varna on Monday.

A patient in the city of Shumen has been proven to be a case of the so-called swine flu A(H1N1) virus, but is reported to be in good condition. The number of those with flu symptoms in the Black Sea capital of Varna has been steadily going up in the last few days.

According to data from the National Reference Laboratory, 30% of sick persons tested in Sofia carry the A(H1N1) type virus.

This year the flu can lead pneumonia, doctors say, and warn strongly against self-medicating and taking antibiotics.

The flu epidemic status has already been set for the entire Sofia Region, including the capital Sofia, where the number of those having the flu has reached 155 per 1 000, as well as for the Pazardzhik and Vratsa Regions, the cities of Pleven and Blagoevgrad and a number of towns in the Blagoevgrad Region.

A total of 12 Bulgarian regions are on the brink of declaring a flu epidemic.

Bulgarian districts with flu epidemic rise to 12

Flu continues spreading across Bulgaria. On Tuesday the districts of Plovdiv, Varna, Vidin, Targovishte, and Pernik declared a flue epidemic, raising the total number of districts with flu epidemic to 12. Other areas across the country are expected to declare a flue epidemic by the end of the week.
The schools and some of the kindergartens in the affected districts have sent their pupils into a holiday due to the high sick rate.

Sofia flu epidemic officially ends but continues elsewhere in Bulgaria

The flu "holiday" affecting schools in Sofia has ended and regular classes will resume from February 1 2011, the Bulgarian National Television reported, citing Education Minister Sergei Ignatov.

The rate of infection in the city has steadily receded and medical authorities have said that the influenza emergency will be called off barring a "second-wave" resurgence of the virus, according to the report.
