Health authorities in the central region are on high alert to deal with a second wave of type-A (H1N1) influenza as a new death was reported in the capital.
Witthaya: ?We need to beef up measures?
A Bangkok resident died from the deadly virus yesterday, bringing the number of flu fatalities to 185. Sixty-three new cases were reported in 13 provinces from Nov 8 to 14, the Bureau of Epidemiology said.
"The report of the flu death and new flu cases in the central region are signs of the return of type-A (H1N1) influenza and health authorities have to beef up measures against it," Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai said.
Mr Witthaya said health officials were assigned to fight possible flu outbreaks at schools in the city and other central provinces. People are being warned to protect themselves against the virus. Frequent hand washing and masks were essential for people who develop flu-like symptoms, especially when they go to public places.
People at the highest risk of being seriously ill from flu infection are pregnant women, school children and the elderly, he said.
Tawee Chotpitayasunond, a paediatrician with the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health, said millions of Thai pre-schoolers were expected to be hardest hit by the virus in a second flu wave, based on the outbreak that has swept through North America.
An estimated 5% of about 7,000 flu patients tested positive for type-A (H1N1) flu, permanent secretary for public health Paijit Warachit said.
Disease control experts believe about six million people contracted the virus during the peak period of the first wave from April to September. A third of the 65 million population could eventually be infected, they said.
Government Pharmaceutical Organisation board chairman Vichai Chokewiwat said the agency was struggling to stabilise a live-attenuated vaccine manufactured at its plant in Nakhon Pathom.
He hoped the trials could begin by next month. Another two million doses of inactivated vaccine from the manufacturer Sanofi Pasteur will be available next month and in January.
