he also replies to emails. I don't remember whether I ever asked
him for probability estimates, though.
Not really a virologist or epidemiologist, I think.
But you learn when doing research for a book
Why don't those people participate here and occasionally post
a bit , answer a few questions ?
Maybe it's the dignity-thing, they are afraid of trolls,criticism,
probability estimates,...
I asked him to make the book available online, now that some people
are afraid of a 1918-rerun. Or just a searchable online register for keywords,
keyphrases with logical AND - apparantly the publisher refused

By maintaining integrity throughout the writing of this book, Barry has been able to write an historical account that continues to be relevant today in that many issues re: h1n1 pandemic remain as in 1918 pandemic.

It is a fascinating book. I am reading it for the first time now (and I have not finished which is why I moved the interview).
I did not read any of the pan/flu books when we started because I wanted to view the facts as they developed without any preconceived ideas.
It is a book that is rich in ideas. Already in the first chapter he references: Thomas Huxley, H.I. Mencken, Goethe, Thomas Kuhn, Hippocrates, Galen, Fracastorius, Paracelsus, Vesalius, Benjamin Rush......
It is comfortable to carry a book around again. I like the feel and the touch. Like a hug from an old friend. The faint smell of the pages. The crisp sound of the paper as each page is turned. The visualization in the mind`s eye of the words written.

One minor point, it is mentioned in the questions that the mobile (cell phone) phone networks went down during the London 2005 terrorist bombings.
This isn't correct. We have what we call a priority users list (emergency services etc.) and the network can be restricted in certain cells to the priority users (work phones only, not private) so that they can still get a signal and co-ordinate help. This was done in 2005, you can imagine what the phone systems go like in a major city like London when it gets bombed and the priority is to allow the police, ambulance and fire brigade to be able to communicate.
I would have thought that the US would have this system as well.
