Sarasota teacher has contagious respiratory infection

SARASOTA COUNTY ? A hospitalized teacher sick for the past week with a mysterious illness contracted streptococcus pneumoniae, a contagious disease in the respiratory tract, school officials said Friday.

?Out of an abundance of caution, the school district has gone through two rounds of hospital-grade cleansing at Bay Haven to ensure the continued health and well-being of our students and staff, and we will continue to be diligent in our efforts,? district spokeswoman Tracey Beeker said Friday.
Officials said are unsure how the unnamed teacher contracted the illness.
