BUNNELL, Fla. (AP) - State officials are planning to euthanize about 400 pigs who have been quarantined for an infectious disease at an animal sanctuary since 2005.

A court order granted the Flagler County State Attorney's Office custody of the pigs Tuesday. The animals have lived on a sanctuary in central Florida for more than a decade. Local officials tried for months to get the facility to comply with regulations or shut down.

A spokesman for the Florida Department of Agriculture says there is concern the pigs may have an infectious disease caused by bacteria that can be transmitted to people. Symptoms can be flu like, but can progress to something more serious.

Lory Yazurlo, who runs the sanctuary, says the pigs never tested positive for the bacteria.

Officials said the pigs will be euthanized within a week.

BUNNELL, Fla. -- Residents in Flagler County called in local and federal government agencies to help clean up a pig sanctuary that has turned into a pigsty.

United States Department of Agriculture agents said a court order on Wednesday turned over the ownership of some 425 pigs in the Pig Tale Sanctuary, owned by Lory Yazurlo, to Flagler county.

Pavone said Yazurlo, who is confined to a wheelchair, has been embroiled in a five-year battle over the conditions of the sanctuary after USDA agents found animals dead or dying in the trash-strewn acreage.

Officials said Yazurlo failed to follow a clean-up and quarantine plan, and the remaining pigs have been placed under quarantine because some contracted a contagious viral disease.

State plans to kill pigs at Flagler sanctuary

Posted in: Flagler Tagged:Lory Yazurlo ,Pig Tales Sanctuary BUNNELL -- The pigs' tale is just about told now that a court order has granted custody of nearly 400 swine to Flagler County and the Florida Department of Agriculture plans to euthanize them.

The pigs have lived in the western reaches of the county since a sanctuary was started 15 years ago. A court order sought by the State Attorney's Office transferred the ownership of the animals kept at the Pig Tales Sanctuary to Flagler County late Tuesday, said county spokesman Carl Laundrie.

County, state and federal agencies had been working together at least since this summer to either bring the facility into compliance with court orders or shut it down.

Within the week, all of the pigs will be rounded up, removed from the property and euthanized, said Mark Fagan with the Florida Department of Agriculture.
