Norovirus outbreak at area nursing homes

Norovirus, or ?stomach flu,? outbreaks have been reported at eight nursing homes in Brevard County, said Barry Inman, epidemiologist for the county health department, affecting from 10 percent to 25 percent of the residents.

STUART, Fla. -- Health officials are urging Martin County residents to take precautions like washing their hands after a significant increase in reports of what most people would call "stomach flu."​

The Martin County Health Department's Division of Epidemiology reports a 29 percent increase in gastrointestinal illness (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) in Martin County during the last two weeks of December, based on ER visits.​

Nursing Homes Quarintined Due To Norovirius

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. -- An outbreak of the stomach illness, norovirus has become so wide-spread in Brevard County, that eight nursing homes have been quarantined.

Some pediatricians have reported some cases in children as well, but it's been more concentrated in nursing homes which in some cases have had to isolate many residents and limit some visitors...

Assisted-living facility has norovirus outbreak​

BRADENTON -- A local assisted living facility has 14 confirmed cases of norovirus and patients have been confined to their rooms to prevent further spread of the illness.

Michael Davidson, executive director at Emeritus at Bradenton, said his staffers immediately reported the problem to the Manatee County Health Department after discovering several residents last week had flu-like symptoms.​

Meningitis, Norwalk virus hit Martin Correctional Institution inmates

Prison officials at the Martin Correctional Institution were still dealing with a potentially deadly bacterial meningitis outbreak at the jail last week when Martin County Health Department officials say they were first alerted to the another contagious disease spreading through prison dorms ? one that had inmates vomiting and experiencing flu-like symptoms.

Health department officials eventually confirmed six inmates had contracted Norovirus ? a gastrointestinal virus known as the "Norwalk virus," which has made headlines in recent years for a number of outbreaks on cruise ships.

Up to 130 other inmates showed symptoms of the disease...
