DOH ENCOURAGES AWARENESS OF POTENTIAL BACTERIA IN GULF WATERS

TALLAHASSEE ? The Florida Department of Health (DOH) urges Floridians with certain health conditions to avoid eating raw oysters and exposing open wounds to seawater and estuarine water, which may harbor bacteria called Vibrio vulnificus. Occurring naturally in the warm waters of the Gulf
coast, particularly during the summer months, Vibrio vulnificus has the potential to cause serious illness.

Those with liver damage due to excessive drinking and individuals with liver disease, including Hepatitis C and cirrhosis, are most at risk for developing serious illness from Vibrio vulnificus. Other at-risk health conditions include hemochromatosis (iron overload), diabetes, cancer, stomach disorders or any illness or treatment that weakens the immune system. At-risk individuals are more likely to become extremely ill or die from eating raw oysters containing these bacteria. People in these high-risk groups are also at risk of serious illness if they have wounds, cuts or scratches and wade in estuarine areas or seawater where the bacteria might be present. Individuals living without these conditions can become ill from eating raw oysters containing these bacteria and from exposing open wounds to sea and estuarine waters, although their illnesses tend to be less severe.

Symptoms of Vibrio vulnificus in wound infections typically include swelling, pain, and redness at the wound site. Both gastrointestinal and wound infections may cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, chills, and the formation of blistering skin lesions. Individuals experiencing these symptoms should contact a physician immediately for diagnosis and treatment.

In 2013, several illnesses attributed to Vibrio vulnificus infection have been reported in Florida. The Department of Health investigates all cases reported in Florida. When cases result from food exposure, the Department works with regulatory agencies to identify the seafood?s harvest area. The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DACS) is also notified and may shut down the harvest area and recall seafood if multiple incidents emerge from the same location.

Thoroughly cooking oysters, either by frying, stewing, or roasting eliminates harmful bacteria and viruses in the meat. Consuming raw oysters that have undergone a post-harvest treatment process to eliminate the bacteria can also reduce the risk of illness. Avoiding exposure of open wounds to seawater and estuarine water reduces the risk of wound infections.

The Florida Department of Health works to protect, promote & improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county, & community efforts.

Coastal Bend resident dies of vibrio infection, the first such death in region this year
By Rhiannon Meyers
Posted July 22, 2013 at 10:43 a.m.

CORPUS CHRISTI ? A Coastal Bend resident died last week after being infected with a bacteria found in warm coastal waters, the region?s first vibrio death this year, the state?s health department has confirmed.

Department officials declined to release any more identifying information, including the resident?s gender, age and residence, date of death or where he or she contracted the bacteria, citing privacy concerns.

There have been six other vibrio infections reported in the region this year, said Dr. Brian Smith, director of the Department of State Health Services? Region 11. All were treated and released.

Fourth death from ?Flesh-eating bacteria? ? 26 year old Florida man dies after taking a swim
HealthJune 27, 2015

Vibrio Vulnificus is back. Nicknamed ?flesh-eating bacteria? this scary-sounding bacteria frightened off way too many tourists and holiday makers from the beaches of Florida two weeks back.

However, the fear may not be unreal as a 26 year old Florida man has died after contracting the bacteria while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico off the Florida coast earlier this month, according to his mother.

Yeager?s death is Florida?s fourth Vibrio vulnificus fatality this year, Florida Department of Health spokeswoman Mara Burger told ABC News. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 35 people died of the disease in 2014.

Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium that normally lives in warm seawater and is part of a group of vibrios that are called ?halophilic? because they require salt.
Vibrio vulnificus infections are rare.
Vibrio vulnificus is a naturally occurring bacteria in warm, brackish seawater.
Water and wounds do not mix. Do not enter the water if you have fresh cuts or scrapes.
IMPORTANT: Individuals who are immunocompromised, e.g chronic liver disease, kidney disease, or weakened immune system, should wear proper foot protection to prevent cuts and injury caused by rocks and shells on the beach.

A total of 10 people have died from Vibrio vulnificus bacteria this year, exceeding the number of deaths in 2014 by three.

A Pinellas County resident is the 10th person to have died from Vibrio vulnificus bacteria since the year began.

The Florida Department of Health confirmed the death on its website late last week. The total number of cases this year reached 19 as of July 31 with 10 of those cases resulting in deaths. The Pinellas case is a first this year in that county. Pinellas saw four cases in 2014 with no deaths.
