NASA shuts down 2 rocket facilities after engineer tests positive for Covid-19, in 'major setback' to 2024 moon flight hopes

20 Mar, 2020 00:50 / Updated 3 minutes ago
Reuters / Jonathan Bachman
NASA has announced the closure of two rocket production and testing centers after an engineer at one facility contracted the coronavirus, potentially shattering the ambitious dream of a manned Moon mission in 2024.

Both the Stennis Space Center in southern Mississippi and the Michoud Assembly Facility about 40 miles away in New Orleans will halt operations, NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a statement on Thursday. The move was called for by “Stage 4” of NASA’s disaster response guidelines, which recommend full closures for facilities under emergency conditions.

“The change at Stennis was made due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the community around the center ... and one confirmed case among our Stennis team....:tiphat:https://www.rt.com/usa/483568-nasa-c...s-moon-flight/

Apparently Florida expects a surge of people leaving the tri-state area to flee coronavirus.

"I hereby direct all persons whose point of departure originates from outside the State of Florida in an area with substantial community spread, to include the New York Tri-State Area (Connecticut, New Jersey and New York), and entering the State of Florida through airports to isolate or quarantine for a period of 14 days from the time of entry into the State of Florida or the duration of the person's presence in the State of Florida, whichever is shorter," the executive order says.

The man died Monday, according to health officials. The state did not note any relevant travel history or contact with another confirmed case. No other details were available, including underlying health issues. The death, along with another in Lee County, would bring Florida’s toll to 20...
