Most of the now 98 reported cases in Collier are victims between the ages of 15 to 24, according to FDOH data, although one of the new cases was a victim between the ages of 10 to 14. An outbreak has been sweeping through the campus of Ave Maria University, a small Catholic school with roughly 1,400 students, since late January.

The other three new cases were reported in Osceola, Pasco and Pinellas counties. All of them were older than 20 years old, the FDOH said. (Scroll down for the county-by-county breakdown.)

Measles cases slow down in Florida, but numbers remain historically high
Central Florida Public Media | By Joe Mario Pedersen
Published April 2, 2026 at 8:56 PM EDT

Florida's measles outbreak appears to have slowed down. However, measles counts continue to rise throughout the country.

In the latest available data for last month (through March 28), the state reported 21 new cases – a remarkable dropoff from the 123 cases between January and February, according to the Florida Department of Health.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention labels measles as one of the most contagious diseases in the world. The airborne virus can cause coughing, fever, red eyes and a rash. Measles is especially dangerous for babies and young children.

The diminished spread of measles is a good sign, but Florida's overall case numbers for the first three months are highly unusual. The state's online public database shows measles cases starting from 1992. This year recorded more than triple Florida's previous highest year (1992) for measles, and accounts for a third of all Florida's cases.

Most cases this year – 106 – have been reported in Collier County, where students of Ave Maria University were diagnosed...

The number of cases in Florida slowed in April, but the CDC has issued guidance to state and local health departments that more cases can be expected in the summer travel season.

Orange and Palm Beach counties each reported a new measles case during the week ending May 23, according to the latest data from the Florida Department of Health.

Orange has recorded three cases over the past two weeks. The latest patient was age 25 to 29.

Palm Beach has had three cases since April 18. Two previous cases were tied to a high school and the same residence. The latest patient was age 45 to 49.

The state has had 154 cases in 15 counties this year, nearly twice the total reported in the last 25 years, according to the health department.

The state remains fourth overall for 2026 measles infections, behind South Carolina, Utah and Texas, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Protection.

While cases boomed in Florida for the first two months of the year, reports of measles slowed down to a halt by the start of May. However, the CDC has warned state and local health departments that more cases can be expected in the summer travel season...
