Florida dengue numbers surge again, with 152 in latest update

Florida reported 41 new locally acquired cases of dengue fever - sometimes called breakbone fever - in one week, nearly all of them in Hillsborough County, according to the Sept. 17 update from the Florida Department of Health. That brings the statewide total to 152 for the year. as of Sept. 12. Hillsborough County continues to lead the state with 134 confirmed cases, while the remaining few are scattered around Miami-Dade, Pinellas, Pasco, Orange, and Palm Beach counties...

Three new Dengue fever cases in Lee County and a death in Hillsborough County part of the viruses' rise in Florida

Three new cases of Dengue fever in Lee County and a death from the disease in Hillsborough County is part of the reported rise in cases of the mosquito-spread virus in Florida.

Cases of the disease in the U.S. are typically picked up elsewhere in the world and brought home by travelers. That is the situation with the three cases in Lee County according to Jennifer McBride, Lee County Mosquito Control public information officer.

McBride said those in Lee County who acquired the disease contracted it in Cuba and that there have been no locally-obtained dengue cases...

Hillsborough County declared a state of local emergency over rising cases of dengue fever Thursday.

Bonnie Wise, the county administrator, signed the executive order that goes into effect today as local officials continue to try to control the spread of the mosquito population in Tampa Bay. Pasco County issued a state of emergency order on Wednesday.

Pinellas commissioners decided in their meeting Thursday to also declare a state of emergency due to dengue fever...
