Measles case confirmed in Broward: patient under 5 years old
February 24, 2024
News Team

Broward County health officials have confirmed a seventh case of measles in a patient under the age of 5, the youngest case so far. This patient is not a Manatee Elementary School student in Weston, where previous cases were reported. The school is taking measures to prevent the spread of the virus by deep cleaning and replacing air filters.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported a total of 35 measles cases in 15 states as of Friday. Eight cases were reported in Philadelphia, with nine cases in Pennsylvania in January. Measles was declared eradicated in the US in 2000, but has made a comeback due to factors such as international travel and lack of vaccination, which worsened during the pandemic...

FORT LAUDERDALE - After another case of measles was confirmed at a Broward elementary school, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Schultz called for the resignation of Florida's surgeon general citing a lack of leadership amid this outbreak.

This brings the county's confirmed measles cases to nine.

Of those, seven are at the same school - Manatee Bay Elementary School in Weston.

As for the other two cases, the county is trying to determine if there is a connection to the school. Perhaps a Manatee Bay student played with another child or a family member.

Last week, Manatee Bay Elementary gave parents the option to keep their kids home for three weeks while the school offers online, continuing education without teachers. Thirty-four students are learning remotely.

Thirty-three students at the school are unvaccinated, according to the school district on Monday...

Orlando Health confirms 4 measles cases, but there’s no local spread, state officials say
By Caroline Catherman Orlando Sentinel

Orlando Health has seen four confirmed measles cases at its Central Florida emergency departments within the past month, the hospital system says, but state officials say there is no outbreak in the Orlando area.

One case was in an adult, and three were in children less than 2 years old, said Lisa Maria Garza, a spokesperson for Orlando Health. No other details were released Thursday.

The Florida Department of Health has reported only two measles cases in kids less than 2 years old in 2024, which means at least one measles case treated by Orlando Health this month was not recorded in the state’s public tally.

In total, the state health department is reporting 10 Florida measles cases in 2024 on that website: nine in Broward County residents and one in a Polk County resident. Many of the Broward cases have been linked to community spread at Manatee Bay Elementary in Weston...
