Re: Florida 2010-2011 Season: Weeks 40-48 (Local Activity)
Week 48: Local
ILI: 1.8%
21 counties reported increased flu activity
31.3% specimens positive
Influenza-like illness (ILI) activity is low to moderate and increasing in many of our monitoring, systems. This week no counties reported widespread activity, and five counties reported moderate, 21 counties reported increasing influenza activity.
ESSENCE and ILINet ILI data are elevated compared to previous years at this time, especially in the southern regions of Florida.
Current influenza strains circulating in Florida are primarily influenza A H3, with some 2009 H1N1
and influenza B. Other viruses known to be currently circulating, potentially causing influenza-like
illness, include adenovirus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza and RSV. RSV activity is currently elevated,
as is expected during the RSV season.
In week 48 an influenza outbreak was reported in a skilled nursing facility (SNF) in Palm Beach
County. Ten cases of ILI were reported among residents, and 4 among staff, with onset dates
between 11/20-11/26. Six residents tested positive for influenza by rapid test, other specimens
were not able to be collected. The SNF was advised of proper vaccination, testing, and droplet
precautions. There have been 2 previous outbreaks in the 2010-11 influenza season, in a long-term
care facility and a school, respectively.
