During September 2010, Benin received twice the average amount of rain expected and the floodwaters have affected 45 per cent of communes in the African country.
The flood waters resulting from overflowing river levels have not receded, as predicted by experts, but have actually worsened. Approximately 46,000 homes have been destroyed by relentless rainfall.
More than 200,000 people are homeless or displaced, and 296 people have been injured. Schools and other public buildings are temporarily being used as shelter. The Government of Benin reports that the emergency is at risk of evolving to more critical levels and flooding along the Niger River in Northern Benin could have cross-border impact into Niger and Mali. Humanitarian aid and access to many affected areas are limited due to infrastructure damage and high levels of water.
CARE has supported water sanitation projects and food distribution in Benin since 2008. In response to the current 2010 floods situation, CARE is working alongside with other INGOs to provide mats, blankets and toiletries for approximately 3,500 affected households.
