Fleas test positive for the plague near Flagstaff, Arizona

Monday, April 6, 2015, 2:36 PM - Fleas near Flagstaff, Arizona have tested positive for the plague -- and officials are worried the insects could spread the potentially fatal disease to people.
The plague -- also referred to as the Black Death -- is spread through rodents and fleas. An outbreak between the years 1346 - 1353 caused an estimated 75 to 200 million deaths, mostly in Europe.
Flagstaff officials noticed something was amiss when the local Prairie dog population started dying off earlier this year, as temperatures started to warm.
A series of tests were performed and it was discovered that fleas near a water treatment plant were carrying the disease.
The last time positive fleas were found in the area was last September...
