Collier County reports first case of dengue fever by locally infected mosquitoes

A human case of dengue fever that was locally acquired has been confirmed in Collier County and it is causing heightened concern of more infection, according to health officials.

"The Florida Department of Health in Collier County has not reported a case of locally acquired dengue fever in over 20 years," according to Kristine Hollingsworth, spokesperson for the state Department of Health in Collier.

Last month, the state reported the first local case of 2022 in Miami-Dade. A second case was identified in Miami-Dade on Aug. 1.

Last week, the state health department in Lee County reported detecting the West Nile virus in chickens.

Nationwide there have been 183 cases reported, acording to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC reported that Florida far outpaces any other states with cases 96 travel-related cases and two cases acquired within the state sd of Aug. 4. No other states have cases that were acquired locally...

In a follow-up on the dengue fever situation in Florida, the Florida Department of Health reported six additional autochthonous dengue fever cases from Miami-Dade County during the past week.

This brings the total locally acquired dengue cases to 51 in Miami-Dade County and 55 statewide.

Florida reports 65 autochthonous dengue fever cases in 2022

Florida health officials reported two additional autochthonous dengue fever during the last week of 2022 in Miami-Dade County, bringing the state total to 65.

Sixty-one of the cases were reported from Miami-Dade County, while the remaining four were from Collier, Broward (2), and Volusia counties.

Of the 57 cases serotyped by PCR, 54 were DENV-3.

In addition to the locally acquired dengue in the state, health officials reported 823 cases in individuals with travel history to a dengue endemic area in the two weeks prior to onset.

Sixty-six percent of the travel associated cases (548) were report from Miami-Dade County, followed by Hillsborough County (73) and Broward County (54)...
