SURAT: Five-year-old Fenny Vala, a resident of shelter home for women, succumbed to falciparum during treatment at New Civil Hospital (NCH) here on Sunday. Six others from the shelter home are still undergoing treatment at NCH for falciparum, sources said.

During the past week, many girls at the shelter home complained of fever with headache and were vomiting, which forced the authorities to arrange for a medical check up. These seven girls were asked to get admitted at NCH on Friday after falciparum parasites were found during their blood test, they said.

Immediately, they were put on medication and their treatment began but unfortunately Fenny's health deteriorated and she died. Those undergoing treatment at NCH were Sundri, 4, Anjali Raju, 15, Namrata, 2, Sanjana, 3, Dharmishtha, 5 and Sanju, 5. Sanjana is younger sister of the deceased.

Doctors said the girls are out of danger and their condition was improving. The shelter home authorities were unable to say how the seven girls contracted falciparum. "There are no mosquitoes on the premises and cleanliness is always maintained. We don't know how the girls got infected," says Priyanka Trivedi, superintendent, shelter home for women.

Fenny was staying at the shelter home with her two younger sisters Sanjana and Kali, 2. They were sent to the shelter home about two years ago after their parents had separated.
