Swine flu: Five new cases of swine flu diagnosed in Rwandan prison
News - Africa news .Five suspected cases of swine flu were detected this week in Kigali central prison, commonly known as '1930', the date it was set up.

One patient is in a critical state, the Rwandan authorities said on Friday evening.

According to the managing director of Rwanda's National Prison Service (SNP), Mary Gahonzire, of the five prisoners infected by the virus, only one was admitted to Kigali teaching hospital, to receive intensive of medical ares.

'This is the first time a case of swine flu has been detected in a Rwandan prison,' Mrs Gahonzire said.

The woman in charge of prisons in Rwanda however said that a treatment to Tamilflu was administered to the other four prisoners who were admitted in quarantine.

On Friday, Radio Rwanda had reported that a series of preventive measures had been taken by the prison's officials.

'Before entering the prison itself, visitors will be subjected to a medical control and should 'compulsorily' wear masks,' said Mrs Gohanzire quoted by Ra dio Rwanda.

Rwandan authorities estimate there have been 17 cases identified of swine flu.

Kigali ? Following last week's confirmation of the influenza A, H1N1 (swine flu) at the Kigali Central Prison (KCP), an official in the Ministry of Health has dismissed fears that the virus could spread rapidly amongst inmates.

According to the Head of the swine flu response team in the ministry, Dr. Justine Wane, there were five laboratory confirmed cases at the prison by yesterday and medical officials on site attest that everything is under control.

"Since its confirmation among prisoners, the number of cases has remained stable considering that the infected few were isolated and are on treatment. We are doing whatever it takes to curb transmission amongst inmates so there is no cause for alarm," Wane assured.

The official also noted that there are enough Tamiflu treatment doses to deal with more cases incase they arise.

Recently, medical experts revealed that swine flu cases could rise given the rainy season which causes the virus to spread rapidly.

The influenza A, H1N1 was first confirmed in the country in October last year. Since then about 341cases have been treated and recovered completely.

Experts warn that the public must remain vigilant as regards the prevention citing that covering of noses and mouths when sneezing and coughing, washing hands regularly and quick medical consultation for suspected cases is vital.

The Ministry of Health, through TRAC Plus, the National Reference Laboratory and other institutions, is monitoring the situation closely and continues to work on improving the emergency preparedness capacity and surveillance.

This was posted today on ProMED EAFR. They have the dates wrong. The article was originally published on the 9th, so the Friday involved is probably the 8th, if not the 1st.

RoRo's article above seems to indicate this outbreak has been contained.

Kigali ? Government has lifted the quarantine on Kigali Central Prison that was imposed as a result of confirmed H1N1 influenza A, (swine flu) cases in the prison facility.

According to officials from the Ministry of Health, there are no any more cases of the flu prison.

The deadly flu hit the prison commonly known as 1930 early this month and spread faster than expected leaving over 400 prisoners infected.

In a function announcing the lift of the quarantine, the health coordinator in the Prison Dr. Innocent Gahima said that at the beginning, there were five laboratory confirmed cases at the prison in the first days of the spread.

"We created an isolation area and put about 400 prisoners who had the virus together but as per now we have managed to treat all of them and we have closed down the isolation area," said Gahima.

According to the Head of the swine flu response team in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Justine Wane, during the exercise of wiping out the virus completely, his team of doctors received full cooperation from prisoners with the help of health peer educators.

The director of the prison, Dativa Mukanyangezi said that the government's intervention was very fast and that preventive equipment was availed immediately.

Relatives and friends of the prisoners can now proceed with visiting the inmates.
