What killed hundreds of Lake Simcoe fish?

Bill McCarty, who lives on Lake Drive just north of Young?s Harbour Park, agreed, and said he hasn?t seen anything like this in the past nine years.
?What does this say about the state of the lake,? he asked. ?Fish are dying and some look like they have this white fungus on them. The birds are eating them now and, if it is a virus killing the fish, maybe all the birds will die, too,? he said....
A spokesperson for the Ministry could not comment before press time and would not confirm or deny whether it is the result of viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS), an infectious disease of fish with outbreaks most likely during the spring as temperatures fluctuate and fish are reproducing.
