First two cases of "black fungus" confirmed by COVID-19 in Paraguay

Until this morning, Paraguay was still free of the dreaded “black fungus” or cases of the rare rhinoorbital mucormycosis infection that began to occur in people with COVID-19, worryingly, first in India and then a patient was announced in Uruguay. But moments ago, from the Paraguayan Society of Microbiology they confirmed that the first two cases have already been reported, a woman in Coronel Oviedo and a man in Central, both had already overcome the coronavirus picture.

The president of the union, José Pereira Brunelli affirmed that we practically live with this fungus. "Currently in the country we have already seen two patients with fungus with mucormycosis and coincidentally, like most cases, they are diabetics who have finished their infection by COVID diabetics and 20 to 30 days have passed since their infection by the virus. We saw two very similar patients in that context (post-COVID-19 diabetics), ”he expressed to the 800 AM radio station.

The professional highlighted that this fungus occurred in two patients, both with diabetes and recovered from COVID-19. He added that one of the cases was mucous and the other pulmonary, in both cases very aggressive, but the presence of the fungus was confirmed after sample studies. "We practically coexist with this fungus."

“A case of Coronel Oviedo was a woman who had a hard palate lesion and we recently saw here in Central that it was a pulmonary case, a patient who was not recovering from COVID, had a bloody cold. In that case we take a sample and find this fungus, ”he assured.

He stressed that in the case of the woman she was in serious condition and after detection she died after three days. “The patient that we recently diagnosed in Central is super good, stable and is now undergoing treatment. Now he's going to be able to get out, ”he said.

He pointed out that the important thing is detection in time, since it is a very invasive fungus that mainly affects the buccal and nasal fossa, with loss of control of the eyelids. "It is a fairly invasive fungus, it has a mortality rate of between 50 and 80%," he pointed out.
