First Douglas County swine flu death reported
One Douglas County resident has died from the swine flu and 12 people have been hospitalized with flu viruses since September, according to Douglas County Health and Social Services.
Health officials said the person who died was 65 or older. Further details, including gender, city of residence and date of death,were not available this morning by press time.
An Oregon Department of Human Services Web site reports that Douglas County is one of eight counties reporting 15 deaths caused by influenza.
The Web site stated that although its tables include hospitalizations and deaths from all types of influenza, most of the flu viruses identified since Sept. 1 have been the pandemic H1N1 virus.
Absenteeism for some Roseburg schools reached 10 percent ? Phoenix School reported 16 percent ? last week. A Friday press release from Douglas County Health and Social Services uses the weekly attendance reports from the Roseburg School District as one indicator of illness levels.
Marilyn Carter, public health promotion program manager, said the amount of H1N1 vaccines the county receives is constantly in flux and the department often doesn't know how much it will receive until shipments arrive.
About 1,000 doses of the H1N1 were expected to arrive this week.
The Oregon Department of Human Services requests that at least 30 percent of counties' vaccine allocations be available at public venues for targeted populations. These would include people who are uninsured or whose primary care providers are not administering the H1N1 vaccine.
Douglas County is planning two such clinics in November with one in Reedsport and one in Roseburg. Health Department officials said details of those clinics will be available later.
Since Sept. 1, 482 people in 24 counties have been hospitalized in Oregon with influenza-like illness.
