Debris that washed out to sea from the massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11 isn?t predicted to arrive here until late this year or early 2013.

But people already are reporting beach finds, said oceanographer Jack Barth of Oregon State University, a expert on ocean currents.

?There?s a lot of freighters and container ship traffic back and forth from Asia all of the time,? he said.

One thing that?s all but certain is that radioactivity will not be a big player in whatever does arrive, said Kathryn Higley, the leader of the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Health Physics at Oregon State.

?The tsunami created the debris field several days before we had the big reactor accident releases,? Higley said, referring to the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear reactor meltdown. ?So the material was somewhat distributed, and it?s been sitting out there for a year in the ocean.

It will be simple enough to test the debris and avoid some kid taking something radioactive home to set on a shelf in his home where he/she might be exposed for several hours per day.

Earlier this month, the Japanese Consulate in Seattle confirmed that a large black plastic float found near Neah Bay last fall is a Japanese-manufactured item used in shellfish farming and likely came from the area hit by the tsunami.

However, they could not confirm whether it was torn from its shellfish bed by the tsunami or had broken loose because before that time.

The float arrived in late October or early November, between two beach cleanup events held by Surfrider International on a Makah-owned, controlled access beach near Neah Bay.

It came ashore exactly where and when Ebbesmeyer and Ingraham's model predicted the first tsunami-related items should start arriving.

Their model showed that lightweight items with a lot of surface area exposed to the wind, such as the big black float, can travel as fast as 20 miles per day and should start arriving a year before the heavier, ocean current-borne debris.

Ebbesmeyer, who continues to track the debris, said Tuesday he is preparing a guide to help beachcombers recognize the difference between trash and tsunami debris.

This month, the Yamhill Valley News-Register published a story about how various Oregon agencies and groups are preparing for potentially radioactive debris to reach the coast. Recently, they held a conference call to review Oregon’s planned response as the one year anniversary of the Japanese earthquake and resulting tsunami approaches in early March.

Although most experts do not expect the debris to carry much radioactive material, area residents are still concerned. The bulk of the debris is expected to begin arriving later in the year or into the beginning of next year.

Materials that may be contaminated with cesium are one significant concern. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “The most common radioactive form of cesium is cesium-137. Another fairly common radioisotope is cesium-134. Cesium-137 is much more significant as an environmental contaminant than cesium-134.”

Nuclear reactor waste and accidental releases such as at the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear plant accidents did release some cesium into the environment. The half-life of cesium-137 is 30.17 years. Because of the chemical nature of cesium, it moves easily through the environment which makes the cleanup of cesium-137 difficult...

Jeff Olsson of Victoria's joint rescue co-ordination centre says an airline contracted by the federal government spotted the vessel on Tuesday about 140 nautical miles west of the southern tip of Haida Gwaii....

Coast Guard sinks derelict Japanese vessel

April 6th, 2012

JUNEAU, Alaska ? The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Anacapa successfully sank the derelict fishing vessel Ryou-Un Maru 180 miles west of the Southeast Alaskan coast today at 6:15 p.m.

The Anacapa crew began its operation to sink the vessel at approximately 1 p.m. and completed two gunnery evolutions shooting highly explosive ammunition into the vessel until it sank in 6,072 feet of water.

?For the safety of mariners, sinking the vessel was the quickest way to properly address the danger this unattended vessel posed,? said Capt. Daniel Travers, Coast Guard District 17 Incident Manager. ?The Anacapa crew did an outstanding job safely completing their mission.?

The Coast Guard worked closely with federal, state and local agencies to assess the immediate dangers the vessel presented and determined that sinking the vessel at sea would be the best course of action to help minimize any navigation and environmental threats. Light sheening and minimal debris have been reported from the sinking of the vessel, and the sheening is expected to quickly dissipate at sea.

They checked with the ship's owner to make sure he didn't want to to try to salvage it before they sunk it.

When will the debris from the tsunami in Japan reach the U.S.?

Many variables affect where the debris will go and when. Items will sink, disperse, and break up along the way, and winds and ocean currents constantly change, making it very difficult to predict an exact date and location for the debris? arrival on our shores.

NOAA researchers are currently relying on computer models to predict the debris items? path and drift rate, but it's possible that some buoyant materials are reaching U.S. shorelines right now.

New information: A recent modeling effort gave NOAA a better understanding of how fast the debris may travel, because modelers were able to incorporate actual wind speed and ocean current data from the past year. The NOAA Marine Debris Program will make that model available online shortly.

Why are pieces of debris washing up now if scientists think it will take years?

Marine debris is an everyday problem for much of the Pacific Region, and it washes upon our coasts from Asia all of the time. Items need to be closely inspected before we can determine, if possible, that they were washed into the sea by the tsunami. Not every piece of debris found on U.S. shores is from Japan.

How much debris is out there? Is there a debris field?

The Japanese government estimated that the tsunami swept about 5 million tons of debris into the ocean, but that 70 percent sank off shore, leaving 1.5 million tons floating. There no estimate of how much debris is still floating today.

We do know that the debris is no longer in a ?debris field.?

Rather, there are many items scattered across a large area of the North Pacific.

Immediately after the event, satellite sensors focused on the area around Japan picked up tsunami debris, but by April 14, 2011, the debris had dispersed to a point where the sensors could no longer detect it. This doesn't mean it has vanished - we just can't see it with lower resolution satellites, making it very difficult to locate.

Is the debris radioactive?



There is consensus among scientists that this is highly unlikely, for several reasons:
  • First, the tsunami created debris over a large stretch of coastal Japan, while the leak from the damaged Fukushima reactor occurred in one place. Therefore, the vast majority of the debris was many miles away from the reactor, precluding any contact with the radioactive leak.
  • Second, the leak of contaminated water from the reactor into the sea started days to weeks after the debris was washed out to sea. By the time the radioactive water leak developed, the debris was already in the ocean, miles away from the reactor, and moving farther offshore by currents and wind. Exposure to contaminated water, which also moves by currents, was unlikely to occur.
  • Finally, vessels coming into the United States from Japan were monitored for radiation, and readings were below the level of concern. In the one instance where debris from the Fukushima region was found ? a small boat picked up by the research vessel STS Pallada ? it was tested for radiation and the levels were normal.
However, cleaning up the shoreline and handling marine debris is not risk free. As with any outdoors activity, it is important to follow common sense and put safety first. Avoid picking up debris that you are not well equipped and trained to handle. For example, be careful of sharp objects that could cut your hands; avoid picking up sealed containers of chemicals ? they may crack or break and spill the content on you; likewise, report any full drum on the beach, and avoid handling it yourself. If you are uncomfortable handling any debris item, leave it where it is.

What is NOAA doing about the tsunami-generated marine debris?

NOAA is doing several things:

  • The NOAA Marine Debris Program (MDP) is coordinating with internal and external NOAA partners to explore the best actions for addressing the debris.
  • The MDP is working with internal and external NOAA partners on a Japan Tsunami Marine Debris Assessment and Response Framework for holistic and cooperative planning to respond to the potential threats posed by marine debris resulting from the Japan tsunami.
  • NOAA is one of the lead members on a Japan Tsunami Debris Workgroup including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and University of Hawaii researchers among others.
  • NOAA is working with EPA on a joint informational "Tsunami Debris Workgroup Bulletin." Sign up to receive this bulletin.
  • NOAA is gathering information on significant sightings of marine debris in the N. Pacific through NOAA Office of Marine and Aviation Operation?s Pacific fleet of vessels, the NOAA Voluntary Observing Ship Program, and NOAA Pacific Islands Regional Observer Program and their work with the Hawaii longline fishing industry.
  • NOAA is working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on shoreline debris monitoring in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.
  • NOAA is working through its National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) to partner with government groups who have access to higher resolution satellite data.
  • NOAA convened scientists to review available data, including modeling output, and provide insight on debris fate and transport.
How can we begin monitoring the shore or report sightings of tsunami debris?

Information on significant marine debris sightings in the North Pacific Ocean and on the coast is greatly needed and can be reported to the NOAA Marine Debris Program at DisasterDebris@noaa.gov.

The NOAA Marine Debris Program (MDP) is happy to provide information to individuals or groups interested in undertaking shoreline monitoring studies for Japan tsunami marine debris. Effective monitoring of changes in environmental conditions, such as the abundance of marine debris, requires a good deal of forethought. Here are some tips and suggestions:

1. Clear objectives and methods: Monitoring projects should have clearly stated objectives and use agreed-upon methods and field measurements to allow for comparability of data with previous research and that conducted in other areas.

2. Baseline data monitoring: In order to detect a change in the concentration of marine debris over time, reliable baseline data is needed. Thus, if you are interested in monitoring to detect a pulse of tsunami-related debris, we suggest regular sampling begin well before the expected arrival of the tsunami debris in your area. At least one year would be ideal.

3. Debris type information: Gathering information on the type of debris found (e.g., lumber, plastic, rubber, fabric, metal, glass) is important. With this information, changes in the types and amounts of marine debris over time may be seen. For example, you may begin to notice an unusual increase in a certain type of debris item around the time of predicted tsunami debris arrival to your area.

4. There?s an app for that: If you who wish to contribute to the collection of baseline marine debris information, consider downloading and using the Marine Debris Tracker smartphone application (http://www.marinedebris.engr.uga.edu/) to record, visualize, and share data.

The aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan is the command ship of USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group (Carrier Strike Group 7), which has a complement of other ships travelling with it: the cruiser USS Chancellorsville (CG-62), the destroyer USS Preble (DDG-88), and combat support ship USNS Bridge (T-AOE-10). It is not clear as to whether these ships also passed through the same radiation cloud, or if they crew members of these ships experienced radiation exposure as well.

Also, Pentagon officials stated that US helicopters flying rescue missions 60 miles north of the Fukushima nuclear plant got covered with radioactive particles on the outside of the craft, which had to removed by washing it off.

Prevailing winds in the area are blowing eastward across the Pacific Ocean, and it is possible that radiation could reach Wake Island or Midway Island by week?s end, the halfway point between Japan and Hawaii...

The winds were blowing in the direction of the debris, too, I think. As far as the consensus of scientists downplaying possible radiation contamination of debris, it seems to exclude our local scientists who were most accurate in predicting when debris would arrive here. From the Peninsula Daily News article posted above:

So I think there should be monitoring of the debris since these local independent scientists might just also be right about recommending that. Here is a video of their presentation done in December about the debris:

The owner, Ikuo Yokoyama, a 29-year-old resident of the town of Yamamoto, in Miyagi Prefecture, was tracked down by a Harley-Davidson representative in Japan who saw the story, first reported by CBC News, in the media.

A company spokeperson told CBC News they are now hoping to pay for the return of the bike to Yokoyama and to see if they can restore it for him.

Yokoyama told Japanese television station NHK that the discovery of the motorcycle was miraculous and he wished to thank the B.C. man who found it personally, but so far he has only been able to do so on TV.

He said he lost his home and three family members in the tsunami and is now living in temporary accommodation. The motorcycle was being kept at his house in the back section of a cube van that he was using as a storage shed when the tsunami struck.

It's brought stories of some bizarre finds - from the reunion of a boy and his football washed up on a uninhabited island to the discovery of a Harley-Davidson.

And more could be coming thick and fast in the coming months as scientists are now saying the wreckage washed into the sea from the Japanese tsunami will reach North American shores far sooner than previously thought.

The latest computer models estimate that thousands of tonnes of the debris, which now stretches 4,000 nautical miles across the north Pacific, will start washing up this October and continue to do so into late 2013.
