First H1N1 Death Reported in Placer County

PLACER COUNTY, CA - A middle-aged woman has died from the H1N1 (swine) virus, becoming the first Placer County resident to die from the illness, according to the Placer County public health department.

The woman, whose name was not released, died on July 5 in a hospital outside of the county and had significant health problems prior to contracting the virus, officials said.

"We would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family of this patient," said Dr. Richard Burton with the public health department.

The H1N1 virus is now considered a pandemic strain worldwide. As of July 16, there have been 12 other cases reported in Placer County, and 3,168 cases reported in California. Most cases have been considered "mild to moderate" and patients have recovered.

The California Department of Public Health says there have been 55 deaths in the state attributed to the H1N1 virus.

A vaccine to protect against the virus should be ready this fall, says the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Simple steps such as covering your cough with a tissue, washing your hands often with soap and water and avoiding close contact with people who are sick, can all help to prevent the spread of the flu.

For more information about the H1N1 flu, visit the California Department of Public Health Web site or call the CDPH hotline at 1 (888)865-0564 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.
