Canada's New Brunswick reports first case of H1N1
Fri May 1, 2009 9:45am EDT

OTTAWA, May 1 (Reuters) - The Atlantic Canadian province of New Brunswick has reported its first case of the new H1N1 flu strain, a health department official said on Friday.

Canada has now discovered 35 cases of the flu, which is also known as swine flu. All the cases have been mild.

Meghan Cumby, a spokeswoman for the New Brunswick department of health, said a woman in her 20s who had recently been to Mexico has the flu.

She lives either in or near the city of Moncton, Cumby said, but declined to be more specific. (Reporting by David Ljunggren; editing by Peter Galloway)

Official statement
May 1, 2009

FREDERICTON (CNB) - There is one confirmed case of H1N1 flu virus (human swine influenza) in the province. Dr. Eilish Cleary, New Brunswick's chief medical officer of health, confirmed the case in a news conference this morning.

Laboratory testing at the Georges-L.-Dumont Hospital in Moncton and at the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg has confirmed that the H1N1 flu virus in New Brunswick is the same as the one in Mexico and the United States.

The case is female, in her 20s, in zone 1 (in the southeastern part of the province). No hospitalization was necessary, and the case is considered mild. The individual recently travelled to Mexico.
