The Alachua County Health Department announced Friday that a 61-year-old man has died from swine flu, the first county death from the H1N1 virus.

The man, whose name was not released, suffered from chronic illnesses, according to the department news release.

"Our deepest sympathies are extended to family and friends," Health Department Administrator Jean Munden said in the news release. "We continue to receive and investigate reports of flu transmission in the county and urge citizens to exercise precautions against infection."

The department released the following advice on the flu:

- Influenza is characterized by a fever of over 100 degrees accompanied by a cough and/or sneezing. Some infected individuals may also experience a sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches, chills, fatigue, diarrhea and vomiting.

- People are urged to stay home and away from others if they are ill and to cough or sneeze into a tissue and discard it or into their sleeve if tissues are not available. They should also stay away from others that are ill.

- If people require medical attention, they should contact their medical provider for instructions prior to going to their office or clinic.

- For more information, contact the Health Department at 334-7981 or visit www.alachuacountyhealth.com or www.flu.gov.
